what about ergonova. are they not an option for a replacement? they have some good prices around on those right now.

ZeCanon 02-20-10 06:35 PM

As I said in the racing forum: get aluminum bars.

DRietz 02-20-10 06:40 PM

I can't believe I'm actually going to start this right now, but... isn't aluminum subject to spontaneous failure as well?

:innocent:

ZeCanon 02-20-10 06:44 PM

It's not a question of eliminating the possibility of failure, only reducing it.

Touche, good sir. Touche.

I ride on old Cinelli Altera bars. I like the look of the Ergosum, but honestly, I'm too cheap.

umd 02-20-10 06:56 PM

And they are 1/3 the price. I can't afford fancy stuff right now.

As for ergonova, I don't like the shape. I'm just going to get the alu ergosum pro.

The stem itself was fine, it was the faceplate that failed and as a result the bars slipped. Fortunately my friend and I were climbing a long grade so it wasn't a bad accident.

Carbon is a luxury item. You have to pay to play.

50K + miles on 3 sets of FSA K-Wing Carbon bars.

But yes, if you crash em, replace em.

umd 02-20-10 08:05 PM

Well I didn't fall...

This is opinion of the second part of your user ID. :)

pdedes 02-20-10 08:12 PM

i've seen aluminum bars shear off. not pretty at speed.

patentcad 02-20-10 08:16 PM

It all breaks weenies.

rollin 02-20-10 08:49 PM

Well done for not getting hurt.

Some duct tape should sort it out.

Had it happen. Was slipstreaming a bus down a hill and going about 45 mph. Broke right at the stem and the whole left side of the bar broke off so the brake was pretty much useless ... don't know why I didn't crash. Funny thing though, when I managed to somehow slow down and stop I was right in front of a bicycle shop so I didn't have to get back home riding with half a bar.

Too impressed about umd's bike handling skill.

3T 2010 range should be out now.

Yep. I broke a set of aluminum bars at the stem. I also know two other racers who broke aluminum handlebars and/or stems. In my case, I was standing out of the saddle, while pulling out on to the shoulder of a state highway. The right side of the bars broke off and I went down faster than Toyota stock prices. Fortunately I fell to the right, away from the 50+ mph traffic. I was less than a mile away from home, and I was able to get a ride to the ER for stitches to my knee.

Overall, I consider myself to be very lucky. I assume that my bars had been weakened or slightly bent in a crash, and had fatigued prematurely. I still ride aluminum bars, but I'm still pretty conservative about equipment choices.

umd - I'm glad that you weren't hurt, and thanks for posting the pictures of the broken bar. That's a good reminder for all of us to routinely inspect our bikes and to replace anything that's questionable.
