Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Litespeed Ultimate--NEED PRICE!

Hi--

This ad just appeared in Craigslist. Please tell me the maximum I should pay for the bike, assuming that it is as represented. It's way out of my usual price range, so I need your help! Please note that it's polished.

https://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/bik/1618098736.html

Also, are there any particular trouble spots I should look out for when I see this bike? I know to look for cracks around the BB--anything else?

Thanks for your help.

Do you know what year it is? You can go to eBay and do a completed listing to find out how much people are paying for similar bikes.

OK, I sent the guy an email requesting model year. Not that familiar with ebay, but am going there now. Thanks!

edit--Thanks for the tip about completed listings. Went there, did that . . . Unfortunately there aren't very many . . .I guess it's gonna be a gut thing.

I notice people are selling frames, and stipulating "no returns"--what if it's cracked or something and some sap buys it sight unseen--what can he do? Does ebay protect you at all?

You should check eBay for auction policy. But if the seller advertise a good frame and it shows up at your door cracked, you can always file a complaint. I bought mine used but through local craigslist.

Another search result is: https://bike.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/bike.cgi?cat=bik&fil=

It gives you result from craigslist and eBay for active listings.

A search on "Litespeed" gives you this list:

OK, the bike is a 1999 or 2000 model.

Thanks for the tips!

It looks like a Classic, not an Ultimate. I could be wrong here, but the Ultimate has a tighter wheelbase. It is an aftermarket fork, wheelset, etc.
Ask for the frameset without the wheels.

I own a 2002 Ultimate, great bike. Rivals my newer carbon bike.
Just know that you are buying a used wheelset also.

I got as far as making an appointment for a bike shop to check out the bike when the seller tells me that his price is FIRM--that's too much for me to spend on yet another bike that I don't need . . .Thanks, Guys.

The pics aren't great but it has the bowed seat tube and and curved seat stays. I don't think the classic ever had either.

I could be wrong on the classic never having curved seat stays.
