has my trek frame seen its last season?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

has my trek frame seen its last season?

I have a 1998 trek 5200 that has been my trusty steed since 2005 when I bought it complete on ebay for 400 shipped, and It was in basically new condition. Now after 5 years of moderate riding (i probably do 1,000 miles on it a year, if that) it looks worse for wear. I am especially concerned about a small ding near the bottom bracket that definitely has some flex to it when I press my fingernail against it.

I am going to bring it to my trek dealer (verrizanno bikes in Bay Ridge, I would go to to R&A in park slope where I live but I would rather get kicked in the balls as they are such ridiculous dicks there).

I have heard trek can rebond new parts onto these frames, or in some cases (a trek dealer told me last year) they may just replace the frame. I am not the original owner so Im guessing i have no warranty claim.

Does anyone have any experience with trek when you are not an original owner? Any other suggestions here?

My story is a little different than WR's. My BB is intact, I just have a ding in the bb lug (near the downtobe bond) WR sounds like his bb shell came unbonded from the frame. I am wondering how deep of a nick is needed to effect the integrity of the frame. looking closely, it doesnt seem to go all the way through the frame, but there is a little movement on the outerlayers of the frame. I hope that trek frames were built a little better in the late 90's than they are now!

You have one thing going for you. WR is a genetic freak who generates gigawatts and torque numbers not of this natural world.

Well, when he's not falling down anyway.

Sorry WR, had to be done

Yeah, carbon that feels soft is not good at all. Get it looked it. Might be the last season, might just need some nail polish. Not going to think for the worst, but that sounds not good. Get it looked at.

Why not just fill up the tube with some Elmers glue? There was a thread a couple months ago in which a guy filled his seat tube with Elmers to fix a rattle. I'm guessing it also reinforced his tubes nicely! Go to Sam's club and get a huge bottle or several and fill that baby up! If it does't work out, just go to the WR thread and learn from the master how to whine, complain and make yourself look like a completely classless fool.

Good luck!
