Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whirring sound while descending

I randomly hear an annoying whizzing sound like my rear brake suddenly drags, or maybe tire rubbing the stays? I cannot spend too much time searching where the sound originates from...only because I'm coasting downhill at 35-40mph. What could it be? Anyone wants to fathom a guess?

Sure its coming from the bike itself, or maybe a zipper, flap/tie on your seat bag, helmet strap, etc?

Is anything so out of balance/round that it vibrates when you get going that fast?

Negative. All I carry is a frame-mount mini pump and water. The sound is definitely coming from something spinning/binding.

My wheel cartridges have the primers in place, powder packed, and are ready to go.

Just try to pull in front of me. Go ahead. You'll think whirring.

Could just be the wind blowing through the wheels at a certain angle.

Can loose wheel bearings have something to do with it?

Are you getting this sound when you are coasting only? If so, here is the likely answer to your problems...

Make sure to use Pedro's Road Rage or Mavic OEM mineral oil (Rogue Mechanic and even Mavic specifically state that these are the lubes to use).

Even though lubes like Phil Wood Tenacious Oil are technically approved by Mavic and might silence the noise, they don't seem to work as well because the viscosity is not right and will most likely aid in create drag between the plastic bushing and the rubber gasket (whole other can of worms and problems).

Serious answer: Do you have any tape at all around your forks or stays? I had a whirring issue and discovered a bit of tape used to hold the computer wire in place around the top of the fork had curled and was rubbing on the tire.

No tape or anything to cause that kind of noise.

The cassette rocks quite a bit, since I checked it last. I think its time for a new freehub bushing. Thanks for NAILING IT Kimconyc...BF is da best!

I have had to do this on 2 wheelsets. I actually use something a little thicker and it doesnt cause a problem.... seems more related to dirt and lack of lube? Take it apart, clean the freehub and pawls real good, lube, reassemble. If its happening on the road, normally just a quick revolution of your pedals and re-engaging the pawls always worked for me

A very experienced bike mechanic told me that he has always used Mobil Synthetic Oil for lubing Mavic FTS-L freehubs. Since I always used this oil in my cars and there are always leftovers, I started lubing my two FTS-L hubbed wheels with the Mobil Synth 10W-30, and it has been great. YMMV

Mavic is notorious for this. Replace your pawls, and all will be well.

Here's a nice deal

Put bike on bikestand. Spin cranks FAST and see if you can replicate the sound.
Vibrating helmet straps, at speed, can cause whirring sounds too.

Opened-up the freehub, and it appears the previous owner packed it with GREASE! The bushing is indeed shot...it rocks side-by-side very much. What can explain the gear slippage when I stand on the pedals?
