I do ab ripper x once in a blue moon but after like 10 minutes I feel like giving up. I did the plyometric x once, and wasn't able to walk for 3 days. never tried it again. I didn't bother doing it because it would leave me so sore, my riding would suffer. I rather just do some push ups, pull ups, sit ups 2-3x a week and call it a day. |

it seems like op's goal was to not gain weight during the time of year he spends on the trainer, winter i'd imagine, roughly 90days.
for the goal, this seems great. i also gain weight in the winter. up to 15 lb, but most of that is gone within the first month or two of my getting in more than 3 rides a week. finally someone actually understands what, and why I started this thread. In addition, did the cardio X and the ab ripper X workouts today. Killer stuff... |
If you want to get a jump start to getting fit, p90x is a great start. After I finished it for the first time over a year ago, I started following other training regimens as, like a lot of other people, if I'm not following some schedule I just won't work out. Preparing for a marathon and my first race season now (and living in a much smaller apartment) so all I'm doing is the ab routine but I really recommend the whole program.
|
If you want to efficiently start the P90X you have to be organized and plan a workout schedule, often it may take time away from riding, which for me is currently a no-go. The P90X is pretty hardcore, the workouts are basic and well thought-out, its effects definitely help. I feel practically no pain on my 70+mi. rides.
Its expensive, (Stolen via torrents) but it gets results. |
there's also a "lean" version that is more cardio, more core and abs, and weight and tension bands. But yes, it's rather expensive, and many people get it through the bit torrent sites.
If these workouts can help me stay in shape over the winter months, and start the season in better overall shape, without having to lose 15 lbs to get into riding shape, well, that's really my goal. Having an indoor workout that I can do with my wife is just a bonus. |
Just picked up the set... Lets just say I got a "discounted" version. I was in great shape last year (thank god for muscle memory). And Im trying to get back in better shape, and advance in my cycling. It will 100% help you with your cardio, endurance, muscle, and even your core wich comes into play alot while cycling. with the weather the way it is and the weather about to break it will help whip me into shape. love all the workouts, but usually save my legs routine for the bike. And hey Lance works out off the bike ;) lol. p90x is not for the weak, and it is what you make it. I do not do it every day, or stick by any of their plans(eating etc.) I do like it though, and know it will help me on and off the bike.

We have the full set (well, as long as people bring back the discs) at the gym at work.
Today I'll do the arms n' shoulders routine, probably with a band or two (they're harder than people think), then one of the more cardio-oriented ones with a group, and finish by dropping into the last half-hour of a spin class. Doing one of the leg DVDs still makes me slow on the ride home. :D Yaniel, the first time through the plyo routine sucks, but it gets better. Give it ten sessions or so (about once a week). ;) |
Oh, speaking of "once a week", and mainly for those who haven't seen the accompanying book --
You'd normally do each disc only once every several days. For example, that Plyometrics routine, which is a lot of jumping and stuff (one of the guys on the DVD has a prosthetic leg), is only once a week, even just three out of every four weeks for the first two months. On the days before and after Plyo, it's more basic cardio and/or upper body stuff. You can stick with the program as prescribed, but you can do fine by picking them based on what body parts need recovery. That way, while your legs are still wobbly from Plyo, you'll just be lifting weights. |
Doug Gottlieb, is that you?
|
I start this week. I have normally ride with 1 guy.....but ocasionally i go and do a good 35 mile rides with some firefighters....they've been on it....and I can see no only the rip effect, but how well they feel about themselves, and on top of that how much their riding has improved.
I cannot wait.....i confess, the main reason why im starting it is because I will be in San Diego in July....and I'd like to be able to take my shirt off and enjoy some sun....that's the main reason. Call me conceited, but that's it. |

Also, my original post asked who does this workout. I dont give a **** if you dont.
Good answer, OP. It is of vital importance that all responses be narrow and literally on topic. Some people would see your response as childishly peevish but I see it as a bulwark between a constructive forum and one that could veer wildly off course resulting in such a wild scenario as, say, a thread about PCAD's new Scott ending up as a discussion about snow removal and heat pumps. Call me crazy but I see such a thing as possible. |
A part of me wants to shriek "Viral Marketer" at you but this P90x thing actually does seem pretty legit. From what I understand it's just an incredibly challenging and efficient workout. I haven't tried it yet but I've got about 10 facebook friends talking about it as well.

Great marketing.
|
I've been wondering about the P90X stuff as well. I'm probably not in as good of shape as alot of guys here though so I might get more benefit.
|
A lot of this depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If the goal is weight loss, and general fitness, it sounds like this program may not be a bad idea.
If the goal is to be a fast cyclist, one would be much better off doing a short, limited, resistence training program focused on core, and using the time and energy that would otherwise be devoted to the PX 90 program putting more time and more intensity on the bike whether its on the road or on a trainer. |
Ok, this better be good RangerD! I just purchased a video set on ebay for $90 free shipping.
Actually, I've been thinking about trying this workout a long time ago. I go to the gym at least 6 times a week, so I'm actually not in bad shape. I just want to get a better muscle definition or ripped, we'll see after 90 days... :-) |

Is that the program sold by that guy from Survivor, Jeff Probst?

I just finished the chest & back workout, which is the first one you'll do if you keep to the schedule, with one day off per week. what a couple of us on here are doing is a bike trainer ride in the morning before work, and P90X after work. Or on days when you have a upper body P90x workout, do a trainer ride. $90 and free shipping is $30 or so less than from them direct, so you got a deal. And, you'll have the DVDs for ever and with a memebership you'd spend that much for a few months. Good luck.!!!! |

well, ok. I've avoided this thread as long as I could.
The OP is clearly a P90x shill. That said there is some value in some of the workouts. The yoga, abs, plyo, and core are all quite good. Like most routines you get out what you put in. Meaning specifically if I sandwich the plyo between two roller sessions I get an uber intense workout that leaves me looking for a bucket. I imagine most people ***** foot their way through these workouts though and at that point they're probably just wasting their time and money. Chest and back, arms, etc.... I'm genuinely not sure why anyone who's focus is serious cycling would even bother. The stretch workout was a bit too low key to be worth the hour, and cardio is fairly redundant to any endurance athlete's program. |

Good thing I'm not a pro tour climber, so I don't have to worry about looking like a concentration camp refugee. |
