bike obsession and shoe/handbag obsession
In another thread, which is now locked, an excellent post was made in response to a query of why women have a thing for shoes. It was very interesting and enlightening and worth a discussion in its own right. Here it is

A new bicycle may improve your experience, but a new pair of shoes does the same thing. It makes the wearer feel fabulous. Other women check out the new shoes - some will compliment her, others will look upon her with envy.
Ok, now that I'm finished with the bike/shoe comparison, let my try to explain this a little further.
I think shoes and purses are the most common objects of desire because their "size" is not a statement about the wearer. Women don't jump for joy because they lost half a shoe size, nor do they cry because they had to go up half a size. Buying a big purse just means you're fashionable, not that you ate too much on vacation last week. The same is not true for clothing - the number on the tag can make or break a woman's day.
Women can wear the same pair of shoes on our good ("thin") or bad ("fat") days.
Please keep in mind that this doesn't necessarily apply to me - I would never spend more that $50 on a purse or shoes, unless we're talking a new pair of carbon-soled bicycle shoes. I've also learned to not to judge myself by the number on the tag.
I think it's unfortunate that women are so wrapped up in an artificial number, which varies from brand to brand and is manipulated to make us buy more. I know of at least 1 company that uses sizes 0-3, which covers the usual 4-18 range. I also know women who wear a 12 that got all excited when they went into this store and were fitting into a 2. Sheesh. I know certain stores where I am consistently a size lower than normal - which is a more subtle form of manipulation.
Ok, that was a long explanation for the shoe & purse obsession. Hopefully some of you understand it a little more now.

Thank you for such an in-depth and enlightening explanation. I was expecting a few, "because they look pretty" or "they make me feel good" comments, but this thesis is quite astonishing and can only lead to greater understanding by the sexes of each other. In this regard, I think you have achieved a giant leap forward in achieving world peace.

Wow, I'm flattered.
I'm just trying to help men understand women a little more. I offer the same services to the woman - the next time your SO complains about your new bicycle-related purchase, send her my way.

Not all women have a "thing" for shoes. I just want to find 2 or 3 pair of comfortable shoes for work. So my question is ... why can't shoe manufacturers make comfortable shoes? It's a rare day that shoes make me feel fabulous ... most of the time they make me feel pain. As for purses ... I don't like them. I think they are awkward, cumbersome, generally unattractive, and that there has got to be a better way to carry things around rather than a purse.
As for bicycles ... I have had as many of 7 of them at one time. Right now I own 6 with plans for 2-3 more.
