Introducing 16 year old to Road Cycling

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Introducing 16 year old to Road Cycling

My 16 year old son would like to start road cycling.
He has put on a mountain bike at least 2000 miles over the years.
My question is getting a older bike with down tube shifters or something more current with brifters?
I never had brifters. To get him started is this important to consider?
Was hoping to stay around $200.00
One thing i apprechiate: a 16 year old wanting to go riding with his dad "PRICELESS"
Thanks

For that budget, a nicer old bike with DT shifters is the better choice. Anything new will be crap.

Yeh, just something that fits him and works. Just the change from a mtn. bike to a road bike will be a big deal, and if he really enjoys it, you can work with him to find/build something a little more serious. Hope you guys have fun together.
