Cassette/Chain Compatibility

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cassette/Chain Compatibility

Hello,

I just ordered a new wheel-set and have decided to go ahead and upgrade my cassette/chain since they have never been replaced (about 2100 miles on both). I'm looking to buy a new cassette (either a Dura Ace CS7900 or Ultegra CS6600). I'd like to purchase the CS6600 to save on some money, but I'm not sure if it is compatible with the Dura Ace CN7900 chain, which is what I have already purchased.

Does anyone know if the Ultegra CS6600 cassette is compatible with the Dura Ace CN7900 chain? I've already looked at the Shimano compatibility chart and it looks like it will work, but I just want to make sure I'm reading it correctly. Also is the weight savings between the CS7900 and CS6600 really worth it? From researching around on the internet the difference in price would be $105. I'm just trying to avoid the headache of making returns after buying parts online. Thanks.

you'll be fine. iirc, almost any ten speed chain is compatible with any ten speed cassette. whether something's worth it depends on the size of your pocketbook. for me, i won't go above ultegra/sram 1070 level for my cassette and chains. using different chains and cassettes won't shave off many grams. cranks, handlebars, seatposts, forks, shifters, and wheelsets are where you look to trim weight. and i'd never buy carbon cockpit components as they are quite fragile after you crash (search for bf member umd's story about how his handlebar broke the ride after which he crashed), and the weight saving just ain't worth it.

ps, if you really want to shave weight, i'd suggest you switch to sram components for the next upgrade. rival is lighter than ultegra and force is about the same as dura ace.
