Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Doesn't that seem like a perfect reason to get a second bike? Never let a crisis go to waste and all that other stuff...

Just the hanger, sorry about that.

I do have a second bike, it's a 1986 Raleigh Marathon with far too old gear to compete with the Tiagra group on the OCR. 2x6 Just doesn't compare with 3x9.

I'm so incredibly pissed that those tiny parts keep breaking on my bike. I'm nearly going crazy.

And yes, on the same bike. I've just sent an e-mail to Giant, as this really ticks me off.

Unless you're a pro, if you need a "break" from cycling, something is terribly wrong.

@urbanknight: I don't want to be messing up any more gear on my bike(s), which is why I am thinking about a break. Though, I've made it thus far that I know a break is a bit overdramatic and I won't be able to stop riding anyway.

@AngryScientist: I'm not sure what is causing the hanger to break. First time appeared random. Second time might be crash related, as a car swept my bike from below me and slammed me onto its hood past week. It wasn't a hard crash or anything, the bike ended up on the non-drivetrain side as well.
Though, what it somehow feels like to me, is that the derailleur one way or another suddenly flips towards the wheel and ends up between the spokes. What I know is that this has happened to me for two times, in a very low gear.

You need to learn how to adjust the limit screws, (or reinstall the dork disc).

First incident sounds like a simple adjustment issue.

Second incident, you get the benefit of the doubt that the accident could have bent the hanger enough to throw off the derailleur alignemnt and adjustment to allow it to hit the spokes. However, even then, you need to check these things after a crash, before you do more damage to the bike.

This does not at all sound like Giant's problem.

They're not at fault, and even if they were they won't deal with you. Giant deal with shops, shops deal with consumers.

I'm guessing you installed it yourself and didn't check the limit screws on your derailleur.

Wheels were brand new (came without dork disc), and yes I did install them myself. Though I had my derailleurs checked by the guys at the LBS after I set them up and they said they were fine.

Even though I might have made a little mistake while setting them up however as far as I could see the limits were set perfectly, I think one of the LBS guys should have noticed something wrong.

Wait a second, you said you broke the hanger. Did it break? Just bend? or do you even know if it's the hanger?

I live in a college town with 25,000+ clueless "cyclists". It's the taking a break part that baffles me.

Its the hanger. One part is still between dropout and wheel nut, the other part is on the derailleur.

Buying stuff on the internet is fine. But you need to know what you're doing with it. Not reasonable to buy stuff yourself, install it yourself, and then blame your LBS, when it doesn't work.

Got it. That should be hard to do, but if it gets caught in the spokes before it gets ripped apart (poorly adjusted limit screws) then that can happen.

It sounds like the part Giant was responsible for (the hanger) did its job. The hanger is supposed to bend or break to protect the derailleur. If you didn't buy your parts from the LBS, they probably did little more than a cursory check since they didn't do the work and make anything on the deal. Lesson learned for next time.

The hanger is there to protect the frame, not the derailleur. If the hanger breaks chances are your derailleur has already been destroyed.
