It all breaks sooner or later
Just discovered a 2-inch crack near the headtube on my ti bike. Hopefully it'll be covered by warranty, since I'm the first owner, but meanwhile I'm without a bike!

Sorry! Hope your warranty covers it.
It all breaks sooner or later, but some materials break sooner than others.

Well, my carbon fork has the same number of miles (8900) and is just fine. That's the thing, if I had 50k miles on the frame I wouldn't be so put out. Guess I was hoping for "later" rather than "sooner."

looks like the crack started from the welding joint.

My guess is stress induced by a problem with the welding procedure. Easy for me to say though.... I have had no success with the TIG playing with Ti crops, (even in the booth) although I am good with Aluminum, SS, and mild steel.

You should have at least two bikes for such occasions.

That does suck.
Name names and then keep us posted on the outcome.

I hope that was in jest?
I got the same advice from a young kid at my LBS once when I had taken my rear wheel in due to spider cracks around 8 of the spoke holes.
He told me to ride it until it breaks. So I asked him what do I do when I'm 100 miles from the house and it breaks. Gawd what a nimrod.

My guess is a tad bit too much heat in that section. Its real hard welding the headtube/under-downtube section.

not to defend the maker or anything, but instead of shooting first and asking questions later, let's see if the manufacturer will honour the warranty.
If they don't, then we can start shooting.
IMO, it's only required if it's a flawed design from the beginning (e.g. R-sys, rev. X), the manufacturer doesn't own up to an obvious manufacturing defect or there are enough occurrences (meaning it's a flawed design) that the product/manufacturer deserves to be bashed (e.g. WH-R500, bontrager paired spoke wheels).

Unless the LBS is going to set you up with a new frame they hae in stock, its going to take awhile to get this dealt with, even if the Manufacturer does cover it under warranty.
So with one bike you could be walking for a month or more. Plus you always want a backup if one needs serviced.
Does your wife want you sitting around be unhelathy, unhappy, and moody?
I would consider buying a new frame, and putting the old components on it (they'll have to be taken off the old frame anyway to send it back).
That way your out of pocket won't be as much as a new bike.
Then when you get the replacement frame under warranty, you can 1) sell it and recoup some of your outlay, 2) build it up with new components, or wait and save to buy components to build it up.

That is easy. Do what mine does when she want to buy expensive crap. Set the bar obscenely high then make it sound like a deal when you get something reasonably priced. For example, Well a new TI frame would cost 4k, https://www.amazon.com/Litespeed-Ghis.../dp/B001T7TNLA. So I could get something really cheap, like a specialized tarmac for 3k to hold me over. I mean that is a whole bike for less than the cost of the other one! What a deal!
If your frame is not covered by warranty go out and find a replacement (used if need be) for about 2-3k and tell her about the amazing "deal" you are getting on it.

NOW you tell me.
Well, good news.
I got an email back from the retailer (Bike Nashbar) saying I can send it back in for a refund or exchange. I'm glad they're standing behind their 100% satisfaction guarantee. For those interested, it was a Planet-X Pro Road Ti made by Lynskey. I might just get a replacement frame from them since I really liked it and I think it's probably a one-off problem.

I wonder how many of those "Made by Lynsky" bikes really are made by Lynsky.

Before I bought the frame I sent an email to Lynskey asking that very same question and their reply was: "This is true our OEM department did produce these frames for Planet X" Take from that what you will. I do see your point though.

"Gawd what a nimrod." Nimrod, name of a Mighty Hunter, usually used in jest in current usage, but not to be confused with "dipstick" or other similar terms, though it sounds like one.
