Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin Edge 500 Rocks

I finally broke down and bought one. Purchased it from PBK with the USA15 discount. I had a chance to try it out last night. Everything worked flawlessley and was easy to install. I'm still learning some of the features, but it's not that hard to learn and definitely isn't rocket science. I've been using Garmin Connect to log in my rides. I like the way you can play back your route taken and even transfer the route to Google Earth. I purchased the one with the cadence and heart rate monitor. Love it so far.

FYI, they recently released new firmware for the 500 with several new features and many bug fixes. If your unit wasn't produced in the last month or so, it probably has the old firmware. I've had my 500 since December and love it (replaced a forerunner 305).

Do you have to buy the maps for your area with the 500?

Take a look a Ride With GPS to log your rides. I just made the switch from Garmin Connect. It looks like they are still working on full support for the 500. I have seen little/no ongoing improvements on Garmin Connect since I started using it at the end of last summer.

Thanks for the tip on Ride With GPS, I''ll try logging my next ride on it. I already downloaded the 500 updates from Garmin. Haven't taken the time to figure out the workout update yet.

Garmin also has Team and Neutral (Black instead of blue trim) versions, that should be coming out during May during the Amgen Tour de California I think.

However, given that PBK has the bundle so cheap, I may just not care about the blue and get one now.

I'm using mine with a Powertap power meter. It works great. However, since it uses .fit files, not all computer programs allow for direct download. I need to download first to Garmin Training Center before I import into Golden Cheetah. Perhaps Golden Cheetah will update their program soon too accommodate direct importing of .fit files.

I have a 705 that was given to me, kind of a second hand present sort of thing. Need to buy the mounts and cadence/speed sensor. Haven gotten around to it, we'll see if I do, I just enjoy riding without a computer so much. I think I'm squandering the usefulness of such a product.

When ordering from PBK, does the charger come with a plug that is compatible with US outlets?

The 500 I bought at my LBS had US and a couple European style plugs (suprised me), so I'd guess you would be fine.

Geez, they've got nothing to brag about. I remember giving one of their developers a hard time at the Garmin booth at Sea Otter last year (Response: We're tryyyyyying) and in the last year there have been no improvements that I've noticed. The legacy dormant Motion Based remains much better.

There's FIT support in the developers builds now. You can get the source and build it if you want to try it out.

Thanks for the reply, but I really wanted to be sure. I have bought from them many times, but I imagine returning an item might be a bit of a pain.

Love everything about this unit, except that, unless I am wrong, the Mac version of Garmin Training Center doesn't currently allow you to program workouts using power...only HR, speed, and cadence. Not sure if the PC version down. Have put in a request for this obviously needed update.

Oops! Holy Cow! I'm not a programmer. This "build" looks impossible.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if you get an older version, how do you go about getting the firmware upgrade?
