Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Ride Reports - March 20/21

Although Australia celebrates the first day of autumn on March 1, March 21 is the autumn equinox. Happy autumn weekend!! ... or spring weekend for those who live in the northern hemisphere.

Doing any riding this weekend?

---------------------------------------------
Rowan and I didn't have any events planned this weekend, but we got out for a 112.5 km local ride instead. We drove to a small town by the name of Yarck and cycled to Ruffy, Euroa, Merton and back to Yarck.

Ruffy was interesting - a dot on the map town with a strong artistic influence, particularly using old bicycles. Euroa was the big town on the route, and was almost entirely closed. Merton had a petrol station.

The route was relatively flat for the most part ... except for two significant hills. One was a fairly steep, switchback style hill that went on for about 2 km on the way to Ruffy, the other was a long, long fairly steep climb through the Strathbogie Ranges on the Euroa-Merton Highway. The first one wasn't too bad ... the second was a challenge.

The photos marked 20Mar10 are from today ...

Nice pics!

Finally the Northeast is getting some beautiful weather, myself and 2 friends rode for 5:46:00(105 miles) yesterday. Temps started out in the 40's and quickly rose, after 2 hours I shed the knee and arm warmers and rode with bare arms and legs for teh first time this year. Beautiful day. Today should be more of the same.

I got 35 miles in yesterday and should get about another 35 today. Stupid cable stretch put a damper on my ride, so I have to get it fixed before today's.

EDIT: I actually got in 50 today, which puts my weekend total over 100 miles.

I got in 56 miles with a friend yesterday. First long ride of the season for both of us. Hope to head back out in a few hours, to be welcomed by temps about 15 degrees lower than yesterday.

We did 61 miles on an out and back over Mt. Cheaha (Alabama), ended up with around 7,000 feet of climbing. Beautiful day to ride also, temps in the 70's. Had a great time.

45K ride Friday, rode without gloves for the first time since November and had an awesome time with the new bike. Followed it up with a 10K run around town just to see what kind of shape my legs are in for Track and Field, and finally a beautiful 45K ride with my father today, bringing the mileage for my first week of road biking up to ~150K if I include the distance I commute everyday.

I headed south for a 46-mile Saturday run. Thought I'd take some pics of the roads around here, which are really pretty decent. We have lots of hills, but nothing too long. Steep, though. With all the snow melting, there's water running all over the place.

Old School photographers might find this interesting. It's in the Town of Waterville, NY, about 12 miles from my house.

Pitt stop in the state forest near Brookfield.

This is how I start most of my rides--5.5 miles all uphill until I get to this point. I live down in the valley and this is the part of the Adirondack foothills surrounding it. It's a slog, but it makes the rest of my rides seem easier, and I've always got a 5+ mile downhill run at the end.

Just before the descent into Brookfield. The shoulders this time of year are full of road salt and sand from the winter. It washes clean before long.

Always a relief to see this sign in front of one of the more prosperous dairy farms around here--even for an atheist like me.

did battenkill spring ride. Last dirt climb was absolutely horrible (they just spread large gravel to fill holes but made it almost unbearable)

Temp was in the upper 60s F yesterday, so I clocked in 108.2 miles with a little over 4,000 ft. of climbing. Not a bad day.

Got in a nice 50 mile ride with the winter ride group. Speed was only OK at just under 17. Despite riding through the winter, I found I lost some speed and endurance probably due to fewer rides and the rides I did were short (34 miles). Temp reached 73F by the end of our ride. Great group to ride with.

40 solo miles along the coast on Fri, 20 solo miles along the coast on Sat, 80 hilly miles inland with club on Sun.

Now I don't feel good. The jumbo Snickers and Mountain Dew I had at a gas station are duking it out in my gut.
