I need a new trainer. The cycleops is toast. Suggestions

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So my fluid 2 is worn out after about 6 years of consistent use. I'd like to keep the price under 400. Kurt? Another cycleops? What are you all riding.

so what happened to the cyclops?

My Kurt Kinetic is at least 6 years old with thousands of hours of use and it looks and works like new.

A few months ago I got an Elite Crono InOut "for cheap" from Nashbar. I really like it, and it's super quiet. The resistance is controlled from the included cyclocomputer, which is nice. The computer can also be used as your road computer, so it tracks inside miles and outside miles separately, and has a screen with total miles. The computer has a ton of functions too, but it's hard-wired, which is a bit of a drawback if you like the clean wireless look. Also, the little roller is made of some kind of hard rubber which supposedly reduces tire wear. Lots of good features, and a decent price.

KK, hands down. Excellent "feel" and function, great warranty. Haven't used my rollers since the Kurt arrived 3 months ago.

+1 on what happened to the c-ops??

REI had the KK and the c-ops on the showroom floor and i tested them both before buying the c-ops.

i challenge anyone to do a blind test on both machines and tell me the difference.

from what i've heard they have updated the c-ops considerably, and the newer models are much more robust (longer lasting), and i've also heard their customer service is top notch.

that said, i dont think you can go wrong with either another c-ops or the KK.

I bought a brand new Kurt from eBay for $240 (including shipping). You may be able to find one if you're willing to spend a few weeks waiting for a good deal to present itself.

Better than that, call Saris directly. Their PowerTap service is impressive, and I'll bet they'll sell you a new resistance unit or maybe just have you pay shipping on one.

I agree.

There is definitely a difference in how they were made though. The KK has a magnetic linking system that can't leak. If he would have bought a KK, he wouldn't have to post here.

thanks for the replies. The cycleops is over 6 years old as well. It is extremely loud now and the resistance isn't steady. My roller has two grooves worn into it and in the past I've asked about replacement and they will do it if I send it in. I guess it is worth it to call and see what they say.
