Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dunno about the US, but we get Christophe and Ale clips quite cheap.

I wonder if you wouldn't rather have SPD pedals and some kind of MTB/touring shoe with a recessed cleat that never touches the ground?

Seems to me a couple of companies make platforms that clip in. I remember Winwood from a few years ago, but recently I have seen them from other companies in triathlon magazines too. Apparently they are useful for short triathlons where changing shoes would be a handicap.

My std recipie for toe clips are MKS Sylvian touring pedals with Christophe metal toe clips and straps. They last for years.
The clipless + straps is for elite track racing.
