Worth Keeping Old Wheelset?
I have an old wheelset I pulled off my road frame when I converted the bike to a fixie, and right now they are just sitting in my garage taking up space. The original bike had a 65 cm Bottecchia frame from around 1970. The I think the wheels are from around the same time. Both wheels have Phil Wood hubs, and Super Champion rims, and that is all I can really tell from just looking at them. Also, the back wheel has a six speed freewheel on it. They could do with some truing, as they probably have not been for about 15-20 years, but I gather that is not too difficult. Are these wheels any good, and are they worth keeping around, or should they be destined for the scrap heap?
Thanks, -TC |
They don't sound like wheels that should be scrapped... try to find them a good home if all else fails.

if you're going to scrap them, I'll happily take them off of you, I'll even pay for the postage.

I take it that means they are worth something? I probably should have reworded the original statement. I would not actually scrap them, just put them on the side of the road and let someone take them, or something along those lines. If these are good wheels, maybe I should stick the front one back on my fixie...

I'll give you $15 no questions asked.

I'll give you 25 dollars and pay for shipping.

phil wood hubs are definitely worth something.
not sure about the super champion rims, because those can be anything, unless you can find a manufacturer sticker somewhere. feel the spokes, see if they are butted, where the ends are thicker than the middle. so yes, keep those wheels around. |
Sounds like nice wheels to me.
Pics of bike? :D |
Super Champion thread going on right now over at C&V.

Similar situation here. I've got old tubular wheelsets with Campy NR hubs sitting around collecting spiderwebs. No use to me now, but not sure if they're worth the trouble to put on Ebay. Maybe sell the hubs alone so that shipping is more reasonable.

Here are some pictures of the wheels.

Also, I weighed the front wheel, and it sits in at about 1060 grams. |
I would keep them...
