winds!..sigh

i get to bike only on weekends..friday night i check the bike and equipment..all good and ready for saturday morning early ride..jersey,shorts,shoes,etc all laid down nicely for a quick launch at daybreak on saturday..i had been looking forward to this the whole week..woke up early saturday and i believe i hear a garbage container being tossed about outside..oh no, not good. checked on weather.com and here is the copy paste of today's weather..

"Today: Sunny with gusty winds. High 81F. Winds NE at 20 to 30 mph. Stronger winds in and below canyons and passes."

there are not much trees or barriers here so you get the full force. what a bummer.

JonnyUtah75 03-27-10 10:20 AM

20-30 is not uncommon where I live in the winter times. Crosswinds can be scary, but when you get that sweet tailwind...oh boy.

hao 03-27-10 10:22 AM

20-30 is still ok for riding...

siran 03-27-10 10:23 AM

Get more aero. More intense ride. HTFU.

hao 03-27-10 10:27 AM

although nothing is more depressing than doing intervals on a flat road in a head wind and feel like you are gonna die and look down to see 12 mph.
another reason to get a power meter.

Will G 03-27-10 11:12 AM

Just went out with winds gusting 18 gusting to 30 as well as shifting from south to northwest and cleverly picked a loop with headwinds most of the way. I hate it when that happens.

I'm heading out for a coast/Santa Monica Mountains cruise, winds be damned! The good part about this is the last climb of the day will include a tailwind.

ls0725 03-27-10 12:24 PM

it's the strong gust of crosswinds running perpendicular to the street that's scary. could just shove you into the left lane with a car coming up.

shelleyspins 03-27-10 01:30 PM

I hear you - it's way windier here in Dallas than it is in Austin. On days like that ('this' - wind's bad today) I look for a route with minimal traffic, ride in my drops more, and consider it a lesson on the importance of proper upper body form. It's all good.

nvrlnd7 03-27-10 03:30 PM

I am a wind hater, hills, mountains great, not wind. Anyway i got hosed today on my loop all my climbs on the way home had that damn wind pushing me back down

unbelievablyred 03-27-10 03:45 PM

You didn't ride because it was windy!?

I enjoy the challenge of a stiff headwind as much as I enjoy a good hill. I also agree that it's an excellent time to practice your form.

Phiberglass 03-27-10 04:14 PM

I can't stand the wind, being right around the corner from you today I agree it wasn't the best day. Plus the dry weather/winds coming through I've been at car shows all day and I'm all dried out.

BarryJo 03-27-10 04:20 PM

You live in SoCal. How bad can THAT be?

caloso 03-27-10 04:22 PM

If it was good enough for Eddy, it's good enough for you.

Same here. Windy days are the one time when being skinny sucks.

my situation is a bit like yours; i really only get to enjoy a good long ride on weekends. when the weather turns bad just as we get to weekend it is such a kick in the teeth. today was heavy showers and gusty winds. i got peed on within 20 mins of starting the ride and over the next 3 hours got drenched another 4 times, each time just after i had dried out and all this time i was struggling in the wind, grinding away. It was the toughest and most soul destroying ride so far this year.

i could l ride w/ a STEADY headwind, tailwind, crosswind all day, you can seek your balance with these while riding. the problem is the 30MPH+ gust that really jolts your balance. from 5MPH steady crosswind then all of as sudden - a 30MPH+ gust from the opposite direction. moving at 15mph+ and it is magnified.

hahaha..we really are spoiled here and complain at the slightest inconvenience. a little "too hot, too cold, too humid, slight drizzle, too windy" and you have the bike path all to yourself.

goaliedb 03-27-10 07:46 PM

Lived in New Mexico for seven years. If you couldn't deal with the wind, more time than not , March-May, you didn't ride. They do have four seasons, Summer, Fall, Winter and Wind

Voodoo76 03-27-10 09:02 PM

Be patient into the wind. And plan your ride so you have a tail wind on the way home.
