Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheel opinions and input - 750- 1000 budget - Leaning toward used Zipp 404s

I have a road and a Tri/TT bike and thought I would get wheels for the Road bike first ( lighter and stiffer than the Shimano 500s on it. But then I thought to upgrade Tri/TT bike first as I race this one and just love the look of deeper dish wheels.

I have been doing some research and for my budget - around a $1000 I can get the SRAM wheels though a local shop.

Some mentioned just get Neuvations and go low budget to see the gains.

On group ride today, someone mentioned selling some Zip 404s - 3 years old and in good condition - and I know the mechanic who works on the bike and he validated it.

They are tubulars, but I would mainly use them to race and some training rides.

The current wheels are XERO 1 that came stock with the bike. The bike is a basic Fuji Aloha I had gotten a good deal on a few years ago.

So would you go witht?
1) new SRAM ( older zipps) - thinking the 4 in front and 8 in back ?
2) Neuvation or other budget wheel
3) Used Zipp 404s -tubulars

One comment the mechanic said was that the ZIPPS would be easy to sell if I decided I did not like them.

Any reason not to go with the ZIPPS, and the price is around 1000.

My TT - Sprint to Olympic Triathlons and shorter TT mainly on flat courses.

Would also want to see what people thought the extra speed I could gain with these wheels vs my current XERO wheels.

Thx for any input.

Have you talked to Psimet? I'm not a wheel expert, but the 404's sound good.
