Screen Protector for Garmin Edge 500?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Screen Protector for Garmin Edge 500?

Do any of you use a screen protector for your Garmin Edge 500? Was it a good purchase? Which protector do you recommend?

Thanks.

Michael

I don't use one on mine. But I have used a good screen protector on my iPhone and iPod. From www.zagg.com. I just looked, and there's nothing specific to the Edge 500. I'd guess you could easily buy anything large enough to cover the screen, then cut it to the right size. Very tough stuff, and almost indestructible.

I don't know about the 500 model, but I do use a screen protector on my 705. It got one small scratch before putting it, though, would highly recommend you to put something on it. You can use probably a one size fits all kit from a cell phone kit and just cut it to the right size, in my case I use the plastic cover that came on top of mine to make a model for it. Just my 2 cents!

Does the screen protector reduce the screen visibility? I've read that the 500's screen visibility (sans protector) isn't wonderful.

What do you use to cut it if its almost indestructible? Diamond saw? Gas axe?

clear scotch tape. Works great and just replace it when it gets scratched.

I have a 3 year old Garmin Edge 305. Almost 20,000 miles. No screen protector. Screen still looks great with no visible scratches. I assume that the Edge 500 has a similar screen.

I have the 305 Edge and I use the same protector for my cell phone and also for where the cable rubs against the head tube. Its helicopter tape. That tape is real thick, won't yellow, and its not the same kind of adhesive like Scotch tape.

One time I put the 305 Edge in my pocket and my car keys were in there too. Somehow the glass broke. I thought the Edge was some kind of hard plastic. Wrong.

Helicopter tape is available at your nearest airport mechanics shop. Or if you know of a NASCAR mechanic, they use it too. You'll won't need much. For a few bucks, the mechanic will let you have a section off the roll.

Thanks. Helicopter tapes seems like an inexpensive option. Does is regrade the viewing of the screen?

Scissors. Almost indestructible for the purpose it is intended ... which is protecting from scratches. Click on the website -- at one time they had a video.

Why would you put a screen protector on a Garmin?

Phone that is routinely put in pockets, and brief cases along with other items I understand the desire for a screen protector.

But my Garmin is either on the bike or on my desk, neither place does it get scratched.

My 705 is about 18 months old. Sees daily use, and other than the crack from ahaving a SUV hatch closed on it, shows no ware. ( And I was rather surprised that having a hatch slammed on it, only resulted in a little cosmetic damage.
