Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a nice steel road bike under 1800...

I've been thinking about the Bianchi Vigorelli. It seems like a good deal and I love the ride. Though I've been thinking about the Masi Speciale as well, but I haven't found a place that has one built. I also tried out the Jamis Quest but it felt too upright.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good steel road bike under $1800?

I bought a Bianchi Imola this winter on Ebay. It is the same frame as the Vigorelli but a lower level of components. I bought it to convert it to a travel bike and had S&S couplers installed on it. I lucked out and bought it for $600. It is a very nice frame. My main bike is a Cervelo R3 but in some ways the Bianchi frame is a little more comfortable for me. I could easily live with this steel frame.

The only downside is that the frame seems a little heavy. I can't remember exactly what it weighs but when I stripped the bike down to have the S&S couplers installed, I remember being a little surprised at the weight.

If you didn't know, Jamis bikes seem to come standard with a tall stack of spacers - you could probably lower the bars a few centimeters.

If you're looking for a steel bike under 1800, why not build up a SOMA?

i haveby tried the soma rush or salsa casseroll, but i've heard good things.
Traitor has a new line of steel bikes.
my girlfriend tried the surly pacer and liked it.

I just bought an 09 (new) Masi Speciale. ultegra and 105 mix, really beautiful looks, nice mix of "classic and new" type stuff. I'm very happy with it. I found it new on eBay being sold by a bike store and won it for $1k

Check out www.zarbikes.com for some awesome Italian frames with that world-famous stage geometry. The Ciocc Com 12.5, Coppi Neuron, or Debernardi Zona (my bike) should fit your needs nicely. Each frame should go for less than $1000 and that should leave room for some decent components. The only thing is that this is the only U.S. distributor of these brands that I know of and there's no easy way to find a LBS that carries these frames. Also keep in mind that the fit of these frames is very precise, so make sure you get a proper fitting.
