I saw the mayor of houston wearing almost knee high black socks at a ride last year. I couldn't help but think they were his old man dress socks.

He borrowed mine.

So you saw Pcaddy........ did he have his helmet mirrors and flowing beard as well?

coasting 04-01-10 09:22 AM

funny how saying knee socks conjures up a mental image of an oldie. The said offender looked like he was in his 20s, making his crime doubly heinous.

Was he "riding" the bike? If so, who cares?

Thanks! Not new, just that I've had other riders tell me I couldn't ride in cotton t-shirts either. 60,000 miles later, I'm still laughing!:roflmao2:

I used to wear knee socks when hiking. they stopped just under the knees. I loved those socks. do people hike in knee socks anymore? I also used to wear hiking knickers, which were cool cuz they end just under the knee and it was a cool Swiss look. also very comfortable over mixed terrain.

calf compression socks most likely - seeing a lot more of them at running races also. I wear them in the privacy of my house sometimes aftter riding/running

FWIW, I hate the look of those funky black socks Lance has been wearing lately. They look like knee-highs to me but I'm pretty sure he'd hand my arse to me on a silver knee-high, so I'm sure he doesn't care what I think!:D

coasting 04-01-10 10:01 AM

it won't be long before knee highs come back into fashion

ahsposo 04-01-10 10:05 AM

I wear 'em with my kilt.

I'll wear some nylon knee highs under my tights when it's cold.

I have abuddy named Jack Hatton, some locals may remember him. He now rides a bent after medical issues now at 76 y/o. I met the guy when he was 64 and we became good friends. At first he told me some bike race stories and I thought he was full of it so I listened to the poor ol guys stories. He was dressed in knee high socks, old ice chest looking helmet with orange reflective stripes.

Yeah yeah old man, gotta go! Wife and I were on the tandem and the guy on his $60 yardsale special (Zuno) with bar tape hanging off the ends, and funniest of all, mailman looking shoes and toe clips, bermuda shorts.

Holy Carpola, the dude took off like a bullet! We tried as hard as we could to keep up on the tandem but within a matter of 15 seconds, the dude was GONE! I listened to the dude after that!

The dude averged 24 mph on solo rides!

One day a team from a local shop showed up at the rest stop. As they were getting ready to leave, he said, "let me try to hang with these young bucks". I said, "well take it easy on them Jack!". They looked over at us and laughed!:roflmao2:

Later down the road I caught up to the group at a water stop and asked, "Hey where's the old man?"

Their response? Holy F$#%$#!!!!!! he's dropped us!

From that day on, 12 years ago, I don't laugh at dudes knee socks! And that's all I got to say about that!:D

coasting 04-01-10 10:19 AM

great story. i think i'm going to start wearing knee socks if that's what it does to your riding.

I could never get past the price of those compression socks. I am afraid if I do buy them, and don't like them , I won't be able to say I don't like them cause I spent so much on them to not like them. In other words, I wouldn't want to admit I was a fool in buying them in the first place.

I've never really understood the appeal of compression hose for young people with healthy cardiovascular systems. Going on a transcontinental flight, and worried about getting a dvt? That, I can see. Sitting around your house, after a ride, with hose on? Not so much.
