Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Homebound super-commute: http://app.strava.com/activities/6131120

64 miles
6000ft ascent
Over 4 1/2 hours
1 new PR
1 of my existing KOMs improved upon
1 new KOM
1 default KOM-because-I'm-first-to-ride-it

Adding that to my morning commute, I'm at 105 miles and about 9700ft ascent for the day. On the studded-tire mountain bike. I definitely deserve PIZZA tonight!

Fast group ride today. Couldn't really hang on to the others, they were too fast for me. Going to start doing this ride regularly, my goal is to get my time under 16 minutes on the one main climb and to be able to hang with the main group(I doubt I will be able to since some of the guys are pretty high level racers).

28.9 miles
2,972 ft elevation gain
16.3 mph average

First timed run

Since I got my first road bike a few weeks ago, a used Trek 1500SLR for $450, I've been itching to time myself on a ride to gauge my base speed so that I can properly set realistic goals. Rode a few times through the city with way too many stop signs and lights, and did one hilly ride through Griffith Park with a couple friends, but one of them was pretty slow so had to wait a bunch.

Finally found the LA River Path which is 14.4 miles RT or so of non stop riding (except for a stop and turn at the far end and a couple emergency brakes for kids with tricycles). Wind was < 5mph which was great. Tires were soft though, maybe 30 psi, tried filling at a gas station but my presta adapter wouldn't fit. Bike pump should arrive via UPS tomorrow, hopefully.

I have some base cardio from hiking, so from reading some threads, it seems 20mph is a good number to shoot for. Wasn't easy but barely got it by the skin of my teeth! Let's see next week if the tire pressure makes a difference. Odometer on the bike rolled over 100 miles at the beginning of the ride so I guess I'm officially a cyclist.

Haven't shared any of my rides here, but might as well start now. Nice little after work ride, went up and down the same relatively easy hill a few times and took a pretty road along the river for a bit. Recovering a bit from a group ride that ended up being solo into a headwind for 50 miles on Sunday. Lesson- don't show up late and expect to catch up when you don't know the route and give fast guys a 10 minute head start.

My hilly Wimberly ride. It really is a pretty beautiful one with lots of scenic outlooks. Especially at the big hill in the middle the locals call the man maker.

My usual Tuesday night hill trainer. I separate it into three splits: a three mile warmup, a seven mile steady climb and then a 21 mile cruise, mostly a gradual downhill. Felt pretty good on the climb, lousy the rest of the way. Nice ride though and decent elevation.

Love the data on these garmins.

Nice easy ride this evening with the club. Some newer riders were there so we all just took it easy.

I wasn't feeling very motivated for my after-work ride. Threatening skies, 36F/2C, active storm cells visible on the horizon. Well, whatever. The Voices require the sacrifice of a rapidly-beating human heart, so that's that.

http://app.strava.com/rides/6225331

I had the studded-tire mountain bike with two panniers, a trunk bag, a half-gallon of Gatorade and a hacksaw for cargo (plus tools and clothing of course). I went to the ATM, then cruised out to Houston Road, a gravel road in mediocre condition, and beat my own previous KOM, down from 6:06 to 5:41. Not bad

On the next climb, I stopped and stashed one pannier, the Gatorade and the hacksaw in the brush, and then I attacked the hill so hard my legs nearly locked up at the top. That took my PR down from 5:07 to 4:44. Ironically my leaderboard position stayed the same. But anyway, it was a good performance. I went back down, collected my pannier and cargo, then took it easy on my last climb and headed home.

It was a windy one out there this afternoon. But at least sunny, mid 80s. Very dry...I drank a ton for a short ride:

Oh and I did a short run on a track this morning, before hitting the pool:

NOT a fun ride today...well the actualy ride was fun, but the ride from my house to the start of the ride was not fun.

3 flats in less than 7 miles. Had one spare tube, good thing I brought some patches with me.

http://app.strava.com/rides/6268272
http://app.strava.com/runs/6268270

Combined stats of the rides:

27.8 miles
2281 ft elevation gain

Was feeling pretty tired today. My knees have been hurting for some reason on the last couple rides. Took it easy.... I was planning to ride tomorrow, but I think it is best to take the day off and do a longer ride with a lot of climbing on Saturday.

Tonight I just did some hill repeats close to home: http://app.strava.com/rides/6271577 Only 16 miles, 2000ft ascent, mostly tempo (and recovery pace on the descents, obviously).

I'd gulped down some yogurt and a couple granola bars about 45 minutes before starting, so I was feeling a bit slow and cold. On the third trip up Indian Canyon Road, I felt a flicker of motivation, so I picked up the pace, put in a strong finishing effort over the last rise, and ended up with a new PR (8:09, previously 8:35) and 2nd on the leaderboard. That also puts me at 58% complete on the Specialized climbing challenge.

After not having ridden for 3 weeks (midterms and weather), I felt super slow and felt like I was coasting more than average...but somehow my overall speed is my highest and overall time is my lowest so far on this route. Weird!

6 hours
106 miles @ 17.7mph average
5300ft ascent

I took my sport-touring bike with fenders, rear rack, trunk bag, dynohub and 1 gallon of Gatorade. My legs were having a terrible day. Heart rate was up for no good reason, short of breath, that sort of stuff. Maybe I need to get my eating done even earlier so my digestive system is completely idle.

Anyway, I was riding with some clubmates and there was a significant spread of speeds among us, so I did some loopback regrouping and also took some crazy-long pulls (think: ~20 minutes), so it was still a healthy workout, but the average speed was a bit low. The parts I did solo, I averaged over 20mph; the parts I did with the group, we averaged ~15mph.
