Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've wanted to post in this thread for awhile, and thanks to PB's Memorial Day sale now I can.

My first quick ride with a Garmin 500: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/36007097

It's an absolutely insanely fun little gadget.

Couple questions -- what is the deal with the cadence sensor "bottoming out" for lack of a better term. I think it has to do with running out of gearing and simply coasting, is that right?

And my heart-rate, is that something I'll narrow down as I begin to catalog more and more rides? My heart-rate averaged around 160bpm and I never felt like I really exerted myself too much on the ride but that still seems pretty high.

Lastly -- does anyone know how many rides this thing can store before it runs out of memory and I need to upload to a computer?

Got a years membership to Strava via CyclingTips (awesome blog, btw) and just uploaded the last month or so of rides to the site. I'm not a fan of the upload/naming interface as compared to Garmin Connect, but the analysis and segment features are much nicer. Here's my ride from yesterday via Strava. I had meant to go on the Sunday morning group ride, but I managed to sleep through both of my alarms and spent a leisurely morning studying for exams instead.

Edit: For a comparison, here's the GC upload of the same ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/36024337

Here is your manual on-line (download it for quick reference): http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/Edge500_OwnersManual.pdf
I see this in your manual: on the History page that it holds 180 hours of ride data. Then a message appears telling you it is full. My 305 will just delete old history. So it would be important to upload it to your PC for safe keeping.

Well, here's the bike ride from the Kansas Half Ironman over the weekend. I did slightly better than I planned on the swim, exactly how I planned on the bike, and horrible on the run/walk. Finished though so I'm pretty stoked about that. Anyway, sorry for the lack of HR data...i forgot my HR strap for the race which didn't help but I don't think it hurt me much in the end either. My first ever tri and my first race of any kind actually. Was sooo pumped up at the start of the swim and had a blast despite the pain of cramping and feeling nauseous for the next day and a half. Already planning my next half and considering a full ironman if i can improve my half significantly.

It's humid as hell. Well actually not today as much, but it is a lot, which sucks.

First ride with the 500 and a Powertap.

Seems to work nicely, but holy crap I'm a wussy. It was a double drop evening - get dropped, went slow and took a short cut, got dropped again just before the end. I suppose this is why I need the dern thing.

Sisquoc Road Race: 6x ~11 mile laps. Me and 4 teammates, one well on his way to the 2s. Goal was to get him in a break. The lap is slightly uphill from the s/f, then a "whoopdie-doo", followed a little later by fast descent with a sharp corner at the bottom, a long windy flat section, a 5 minute climb, and some descents & rollers leading into a slightly uphill finish.

Lap 1: First teammate OTF after the whoopdie-doo with a few others, let's call him "Big D". Caught on the climb.

Lap 2: I'm OTF, bridging to a solo attack after the whoopdie-doo. Caught by 2 more guys and the 4 of us together until the climb. The three of them were from the same team and I was getting pretty worked, so I started taking shorter pulls. One of the 3 dropped off a bit before the climb. A small chase group was catching us and I didn't want to kill myself for the benefit of the other team, so I detached and caught on the back of the other group. The group caught the 2 of them just after the climb and the pace slowed. The main field caught us just before the end of the lap.

Lap 3: Again, after the whoopdie-doo, another guy attacks. Big D and I turn to teammate Bill (sbawolf here) and say "your turn". He bridges up to him. A few more guys bridge to them, and they get a pretty good gap, but are caught near the end of the climb.

Lap 4: Mid-lap, there is a break of two OTF and the goal teammate bridges with a few others. Break swells to 7 and gets about 40 seconds on the field. They are not caught on the climb.

Lap 5: Only 2 guys have been doing any work chasing the break. Several strong teams had someone up there. Big D and I have been sitting on wheels and the 2 working are getting pissed. They keep setting a good pace but when they look for help nobody will pull through. I'm sitting on the wheel of Guy 1 (rock racing bibs, haha), he turns to me and asks if I have someone in the break. "Why, yes I do". Guy 2 attacks and I jump on his wheel. He looks for me to pull through and I don't. He asks, "are you going to pull through?". "Nope" is my reply. Guy 1 and Guy 2 keep attacking, Big D and I take turns jumping after them. After the whoopdie-doo, Guy 1 says, "Just let us go". "Nope" is my reply. Just before the climb, I was eating a Clif bar and started choking on it. Doh. I couldn't breath and quickly slid to the back. Eventually worked it down with water and caught back on. Halfway up the climb, people started attacking. I was boxed in and by the time I got clear there was a group a bit ahead. I tried to bridge and died halfway and went back to the second group. We worked pretty hard, especially on the rollers and both groups came back together on the descent. Break about a minute up the road now.

Lap 6: The feed zone is right after the start/finish, just as the grade shallows out a bit, so it's a little faster than most feed zones. The pace was strung out and I was near the back. My wife stuck the wrong bottle out and realized it right as I was getting there, tried to switch hands and I grabbed it but didn't get a secure grip, and fumbled it. The hesitation caused enough of a gap that I had to work really hard to chase back on in heavy crosswinds. Shortly after my calf cramped on the whoopdie-doo and I was done. I cruised in the last lap with another guy.

Got 25th of maybe 40-50, but more importantly the break stuck and teammate got 3rd. Came home to a bottle of wine on my doorstep

Auburn Century 110 mile option - was going to do the 140, but in the end did the 110 due to timing as well as riding with friends.

Pics: http://picasaweb.google.com/acaurora...eat=directlink
Route: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/36635205

All in all, it was definitely challenging. Went up Iowa Hill for the first time (it is apparently *the* hardest climb around these parts). However, in the end I found that I was able to manage to do the whole century without difficulty, so I was successful in gauging my abilities with my standard double in preparation for the Death Ride to stick with my double and not a compact.

Excellent weather Saturday for Flying Wheels Century. Added 5 miles by riding to start to get to an actual 100+ miles, as it is against my religion to round up ride totals/averages.

Friday's Ride: This ride was interesting because I had a headwind for the first half and then in the second half the wind dissappeared . Hopefully I can hit a 20 mph average in the next few weeks on this route.

my ride today. pranged a rear nds spoke about 20 minutes in. short 'cause i had to feed a friend at a local race, but helped him warm up and down, so added another 20km to my distance for the day.

umd, your race was just cruel and unusual punishment.
