Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Day three in the Alps : Croix de Fer and Col du Glandon. The Glandon is beautiful, but tough as hell. The extreme heat didn't help much either.
I flatted once (front wheel) in a descent and never found my downhill-confidence back.

On Google maps, it shows a train station not far from there. Looks like the ride started at the Babylon Station. All a guess on my part though. I think that would be a cool way to do a one way century.

Yep. I started at the Babolyn train station and rode out to the Montauk station then I took the train back.

Day four in the Alps: La Marmotte
Today was the hardest day of my trip and probably my hardest ride ever. I did the route of one of France's most famous cyclosportive races: La Marmotte. It consists of Le Croix de Fer, Le Télégraphe, Le Galibier and finishes on top of L'Alpe d'Huez. I rode extremely slmowly on the climbs to avoid bonking (kept HR always below 150 ). And it worked!
Very happy with my ride:https://connect.garmin.com/activity/43969604
Tomorrow is a resting day. I feel like I deserved it.

Nice job on the cadence!
Did you have a heartattack at the start of the ride?

Haha, thanks. Every few times I ride, the heartrate monitor will glitch and show some outrageous number spikes. Some have suggested they are due to my jersey hitting the chest monitor or other factors such as interference

The current Garmin straps seem to flake out easily, too. I've had mine replaced twice so far. So far, so good, with the new one...

Both climbs are about 1.5 miles long.

Keep in mind that I am overweight, out of shape, and recovering from four knee surgeries. I have to take it easy or my riding days will be over for good.

Yesterday's Club Hypoxia Trail Ridge Epic - Loveland, CO to the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. As you can see, I conserved my effort pretty carefully so I would have something left for the top of the long climb, and it worked out pretty well. I felt good all day.
