Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, decided to go out in the rain like umd suggested. While it didn't kill me, it did cause my Raynaud's to flare up pretty bad and my toes and heels were horribly numb for about 40 minutes after I got back and started warming them up. I really needed to get on the bike though since I am heading to work for another 5 days early in the morning tomorrow. Anyway, went out for as many miles as the sun would allow since I started late. I didn't feel that great and my heart rate was quite a bit higher than it should have been on this ride. I think the time off the bike has hurt me quite a bit. 5 more days of flying and then I should have some decent weather and 3 days off to hit it hard again. On an interesting side note, I was in Visalia 2 days ago for work and was staying at the same hotel the riders stayed at last night. Missed them by 2 days but it was still kinda cool I guess. Anyway, here's my ride from tonight:

As this is my last week before I start my job, I have been cramming in the miles this week. Monday was rain, Tuesday and Thursday I rode both the shop ride and then with the HS MTB racing team (they ride their road bikes), Wednesday I did a short recovery ride, and then Saturday/Sunday I am doing rides. Then Monday I start work! At Comcast!

I am loving my new Garmin, also.

Just started using Edge 500 w/HRM about a month ago. I'm 45, 5'9", 175 lbs, and been riding for about a year at strong B level.

My AHR seems to be around 165-170 on most rides with a MHR of around 200. I realize everyone is different but both seem high for my age - what do you think?

Your HR is what it is. Everyone's is different and it's best to not worry too much about what yours does relative to anyone else.

Your HR seems very similar to mine. I wouldn't worry about it too much, however I have noticed that I do much better on shorter rides than longer rides. I have considered trying to "reset" my body by riding slower and trying to acclimate my body to a lower average HR. Either way, if you can hold a fast pace for a long time at your HR, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I was running a little late in the morning (hmm, theme?) and had to rush to the start. Of course it didn't start on time anyway... Easy roll out through Summerland and the pace picked up on the 192, and didn't let up much all the way to Casitas. Short regroup at the top before continuing around. Most of the group stopped at the Lake but Aaron, Kim and I softpedaled until the group caught up shortly after. Fast pace on PCH and 101 into the headwinds and then conversational the rest of the way from Carpinteria.

Also met sygyzy at the start. Not sure if he was doing the same ride or just another ride starting from the same spot. I didn't see him again after the initial introduction.

I'm going to cheat and just list the stats since it's my longest/fastest ride and I'm just still excited about it:

This was today:
82.4 miles, 19.6mph average, 42.4mph max,

I don't know how many feet of climbing but there were some definite hills to tackle. Brought our average down from 21.2.

I feel like a demon, though, I love this sport!

Absolutely brutal day on the bike

I started out to do 85 miles with ~10K of climbing. It has been a cool spring here in the front range with very few days climbing out of the 60's until today. We not only broke into the 70's but passed the 80's and hit 90. Top that off with steady winds of 20-25mph and gusts to 35-40 and some sort of stomach bug. I turned around at 31 miles and barely made it home. I almost went down several times on the downhills in those gusts. Scared me so bad I had to stop in the middle of one my favorite downhills and recover.

Todays ride was a blast! Group of 6 had a great time today.

Was the fastest time we've managed all year for this hilly course. Little over 40 miles and little over 3K of climbing with an 18.4 average speed. Had a few places we could have upped the average... Need to work on getting the group back together at the top of climbs instead of soft pedaling until everyone regroups. The slower riders would benefit more if we used our heads.

Trying to get in some hills before next week's Mountains of Misery ride. Just over 9000 ft. Longest sustained climb was from about 450 ft to 3300 ft or so. Lots and lots of folks on Skyline Drive today.

Slow but steady. And slow:

Met umd finally. I was definitely NOT doing the same ride. It just so happens that my group meets at the same time and spot. I actually think there's at least 3 rides going on at the same time. Our rides are much slower, flatter, and shorter. LOL.

i'll never understand why when i ride my track bike on the road i'm just as fast or faster than my geared fuji sl1... could it actually be that the aero position works for 1mph give or take a tenth or so? this constantly happens when i ride that bike...

Aerodynamics is the single most important thing (aside from power) for going fast on a bike. Position matters.
