Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Haha, it's a glitch. If my jersey flaps into the HRM, it starts showing a heart rate in the mid 200's. I've mostly eliminated it by riding with my jersey unzipped partially, but every once in a while it still hits the HRM and throws things off.

I like the elevation chart =). The HR spike was probably due to wind gusts. That happens to me.

Gaviota isn't a problem going southbound on the 101. There is a tunnel on the northbound side that is super sketchy. You may be thinking of the Arroyo Quemado bridge which is a few miles west of Refugio. It's pretty narrow, you have to check for traffic and more or less take the lane. Sketchy but IMO not as bad as the tunnel because visibility is much better. However, the tunnel at least as a sidewalk that you could walk on, whereas the bridge has nothing but a shoulder that is about a foot wide.

I don't think that riding on San Marcos Pass Road (highway 154) is too bad, but everyone thinks I'm crazy so take that with a grain of salt. There are a few narrow areas but a lot of it has good shoulders. You can limit your exposure on the road by taking various side roads, but between Stagecoach and Armour Ranch Road (lap points #5 and #6 on my map) you have no other choice.

Nice ride with a couple of buddies. Forgot to turn the garmin on for a couple of miles but it was a descent so it doesn't really matter I guess. As always I was the slow guy.

Totally shelled after my ride today. Legs were dead after the mountain. Hopefully can recover and have a better long ride next week.

The wind was overwhelming today, 10-20mph gusting to 40mph, and circulating. Felt like crap for the first ten, then fine with the group for 25 or so, until my right hammy tightened up. I headed home at that point.

Grats, even though it says you had someone else for 25+ miles.

I still don't understand how all those little hills add up to 4,000+ for all you guys with rollers. Where I live it's only flat or Mountain, so I don't get to inflate my elevation data like that.

Quick spin...had to deal with some cool and stiff swirling winds in the lowlands around the lake for about 20 miles. The headwinds/crosswinds slowed me up quite a bit. I was a good 2.5 mph (avg) slower than usual in that section and up to 6-7 mph (avg) off in a couple of spots I clear 40 mph ...other than that, what goes up must come down and visa versa. Beautiful day though / no complaints!

Trying to get some rides in at elevation before it gets too cold.

If you are constantly going up and down 100 foot hills, it adds up. It's hardly inflating elevation data.

My contribution for today. Cold and a little damp, so of course nobody showed up. Did part of the ride with the group, then rode home and did some climbing. It was nice to get above the clouds, where it was actually quite a beautiful day.

Some days the elevation correction sucks.

Well, if you want to be downright persnickety about the word "solo", maybe you have a point. I picked up a newbie friend around mile 40 and rode with him through mile 65. Since he's new, I was always either in front or riding side-by-side. No drafting off him. So, yeah, I still call that solo and unsupported.

Regarding elevation: I wish we had long hills/mountains around here. The longest one I know of is about 1/2 mile long, with a gradient of 10-17%. I included that one in my route yesterday, along with as much climbing as I know how to incorporate in a local century ... just for the pure fun of it. And I have no way of knowing about inflating elevation data. I just believe what the Edge 500 says.
