Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Blown Off My Bike

I live near the ocean and often ride down to the beaches. The wind really tends to pick up as you approach the water, especially in the afternoon, and I often find it coming at me sideways for many miles at a time. I have a really hard time holding a line when it gusts hard and have dammed near gotten knocked over a few times. l weigh about 116lbs. and my bike is aprox. 21-23 lbs. Short of riding with weights or indulging my fondness for cookies and pies, does anyone have any tips on how to ride steady in the wind ?

Um. Well. If your serious. Just lean into the wind. No, I'm not kidding. It works especially well if the wind is constant. Gets a bit dicey when the wind is more gusty in nature. Which is what I get to deal with on a regular basis.

Stay on the drops in a full tuck for the entire ride, I've had to do quite a few rides that way this winter, the only problem is that the bike tends to get blown out from under you but it's relatively easy to drag it back in line.
The other alternative is buy a recumbent trike, the wind doesn't worry it no matter which way it blows.
