How far is your first ride of the season?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How far is your first ride of the season?

I guess i should break this into two categories.

Those that train in the off season and those that don't.

Me - I don't train and my first ride was 30 miles on my new Caad 9 - man what a great bike for the money

LOL! Yes, I'm in San Antonio and we were riding New Year's Day. My wife and I just did the first organized ride of the year (Fiesta Wildflower) and completed 67 miles. Good fun, but my butt was sore the next day. Johnybutts, do you do the Hotter than Hell?

Season? It doesn't end here. So my first ride was 12 miles, but that was over 2 years ago.

30- 50 miles I did one ride on a new bike I built up of 30 miles. Then I had something to eat and took out my madone for a quick 20 miles. So it depends how you look at it.

Pretty much year round riding here. But early March I picked up my new bike and was on the road within 30 minutes for a 40 mile haul without really checking it over, trusting my LBS assembled it correctly.

freezing temperature does not necessary yield icy roads.

i kinda doubt ill do it. I'm not too eager to drive 10 hrs round trip and ride 100 miles just for a field sprint. (I can't sprint)

+1 - I know that feeling, and just think, sliding on asphalt or concrete compared to sliding on ice....OUCH!!!

How do you define a season? If by race season, I started mine Oct 3rd, when I was finished with all racing last year and starting base again. That was 51 miles.
First ride of the year was Jan 2nd, 91 miles.

I live in Michigan and our winters are cold and full of snow and ice (thanks to the lake effect).
I did however go for rides, whenever the roads were dry, on my old mountain bike throughout the winter. My usual ride was 22miles going south then north on the same road. That was also the first ride I did on my road bike when the salt, sand and debris were washed off the road sufficiently.

Yeah, season is kind of nebulous...

In WKO I have my season set to Dec 16th, the first day working with a coach, and I did a 2 hour ride which worked out to 39 miles.

January 2nd I did a group ride that including riding to and from was 73 miles. I did ride on the 1st but it was a short recovery ride.

I also live in Michigan, but am a fair weather rider. My first ride this year was on March 6 & was 15 miles. I have about 400 in so far. My last ride before that was the end of September. I did work out over the winter-- weights, elliptical trainer, rowing, and downhill skiing.

I don't train ... but I do ride year round ... even when I lived on the Canadian prairies.

However, if I haven't ridden a while because of illness or injury, my first ride is usually only about 12 or 15 km.
