Taking photos during your ride

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Taking photos during your ride

I still can't get this down. I'm always a second away from crashing. How do you do it?

You ever just go for a ride with nothing but yourself and your bike. It's liberating.

I carry the camera in a little pouch that hangs from the handlebars and opens easily with a velcro closure. Lets me take the camera out while riding and snap a few shots. The nice thing about digital photography is that you don't have to worry about wasting the cost of film. So taking a shot of the group behind by just holding the camera over my shoulder and hoping for the best works out well even if a few of the pictures are taken in the wrong direction. Usually I just point the camera in the general direction and don't bother looking at the screen or through the viewfinder when I take the picture.

I usually post bicycling pictures on the EveryTrail website which combines the GPS tracklog on a map with the slideshow:

Can you ride no-handed? Take off clothes, eat, etc. while riding? It's basically the same idea.

I have a Samsung SL202, a small digital camera, I take shots sometimes. When I bring it on a ride I keep it in my jersey pocket. Simple.

I understand how you feel. Generally when I'm out there, I'm pushing pretty hard and don't feel like snapping photos.

Good shot! Never saw anyone ride a bike using a childs bike seat instead of a real seat, is that a midget on a 10 speed? And that guy in red looks kind of tall.

If you don't have traffic behind you it's not too difficult to just coast, steer the bike with one hand, and hold the camera with the other. It can be more challenging if the sun interferes with your viewfinder, though.

If I want to make sure I get a good shot of something I pull over and stop. Much easier doing that on a bike than when you're in a car.

Before I bought my Helmet cam I would just hold the cam in my hand. here's an older video from back in the day:

I get a lot of practice climbing with one hand. Helmet cams aren't good for panning.

Getting pretty good at climbing with one hand and one hand descending too! No mounts!

Nope, climbed a 2 1/2 mile hill twice that many others walk, so it might look like I'm walking.

Only at the end looking at the bike in my truck, I walked.

Here's the profile for my mtb ride. Sometimes I go to the top and sometimes repeats on the lower sections. Depending on whether or not I feel like riskng an encounter with a lion.

I don't do the first 2 easy miles.

I stop and take photos. Half the fun of cycling is stopping and taking photos.

On occasion I will take photos while cycling. My camera is in my handlebar bag, and I can take it out, snap a shot or two, and put it back ... if there isn't anything in the way of traffic, and if the road is fairly smooth.

I took these free-hand going up Mt. Hamilton. True "point and shoot". High resolution so I can crop out the extra stuff once I get home.

This one was a little awkward

Caught a couple of BF'ers coming down

I had a mount at one point on my aero bars but the camera always looked like it was taking a beating, even on the smoothest roads.

Sometimes I'll attach a strap that goes over my shoulder; the strap is long enough to let me put the camera in a back jersey pocket. If I should drop the camera, it's safe on it's strap.

that's true, but during those tasks you can still concentrate on the road. taking a picture takes your attention away from it. i had taken tons of successful pictures on the bike until a few weeks ago when i hit a pothole while doing this and ate the asphalt REALLY hard. it's easy enough until you slip up, but then again, that can be said for anything.

btw. my camera was smashed to pieces.

It's really no different than taking a jacket or something similar off while riding.

For snapshots, I'll take a compact digital camera, but if I need high-res, good quality photos for a magazine cover or some other print project, I'll strap a DSLR on my back and focus more on the photography than the riding. One nice thing about compact, fixed lens digital cameras is that you don't need to jam your eyeball into the viewfinder to frame a shot while riding.

+1, I don't try to look at the viewfinder while riding. Actually I don't think my camera even has a viewfinder. Sometimes I may glance at the LCD to help frame it but I've gotten pretty good at just pointing and shooting.

This is one of my favorite pictures, taken going maybe 35 on a descent:

More from that ride on my blog

Exactly, I hold the camera fairly low ... sometimes it's even sort of resting on my handlebar bag .... and click. Meanwhile my eyes are looking ahead for potential hazards. Sometimes the shots don't quite work out, but that's OK.
