The Ride Video Thread

Ok, so there have been a lot of ride videos lately, I thought it would be worthwhile to start a thread so that they can all be in one place, to make it easier for those interested in seeing more of them...

I'll start, this is a new video I've been working on, from my group ride last Saturday. A large group with a lot of local racers head out along the scenic side roads of highway 192 and 150, and up the two climbs of Casitas Pass. Some people turn around at the top of second climb, and some continue on around the lake. This video starts with the turn onto highway 192, and ends when I got dropped from the main group on the climb. I just had no energy, an off day.

The second and third parts are uploading and I will post them as they are ready.

I'm sure people will ask, the camera is a VHoldR ContourHD (720), and I used DashWare to overlay GPS, power, and HR data onto the video.

Is the Dashware stuff new? I've only seen it recently? It makes the videos really interesting though. Nice... looks like a good climb.

I assume it's been around for a while, but I got the idea from SteelerHoo's awesome videos.

I've seen some of your videos; pretty cool.

A suggestion: keep them short.

Yeah, I'm working on editing them down, I just needed some video editing software to do it. This ride was edited from 4 hours into 25 minutes, and then into 3 parts. I tried to cut out a lot of the time in between the more interesting stuff that happens, then fade the parts I kept back together.

I think SteerlerHoo's and CDR's videos are great.
You can really learn quite a bit from watching them, and you get some motivation.

A winning combination will be IMO the power/speed data + the tactical commentary.

Yep. And I don't want this thread to just be my videos, hopefully they will post their videos here as well.

"Oh, I don't know" made me laugh a lot when juxtaposed with the intensity of her shouting.

Cool vid Mr. Beanz. Makes me want to bust out my mtn bike!

Part 2: Continuing from the first part of lake ride, this picks up from the top of the second climb, on the descent down to Lake Casitas, around the lake, and into Ventura.

Part 3: The final part of the lake ride, from Ventura to Carpinteria on PCH and the 101.

Your third video is too long! It can only be ten minutes

I don't know if my videos are interesting enough for the almighty Bikeforums..................

cyclocommuter 04-24-10 12:48 PM

umd, I get an error msg that the 3rd video is too long.

1nterceptor 04-24-10 01:18 PM

That's because Youtube has a 10 minute limit.

It seems trivial to complain about dashware costs but right now I'm just not ready.

All my various hard drives are getting packed with videos so I'm thinking of buying a slew of hard drives. I'm currently recording every ride I can, saving them, partially for "ride recollection", partially so that if something happens I'll have a record of it (traffic close calls etc). I was shocked to discover my mac had only 4 GB hard drive left - that's one hour of raw riding footage. My main Windows laptop is also running out of space. I added a second drive for data.

Anyway I think I'll erase a lot of my solo rides (where, so far, cars haven't been naughty). Since my solo rides are pretty boring, save drafting a truck or blasting down some switchbacks, I probably won't edit/post them. If there's anything interesting I can finally use some of my two brothers' other music, stuff that isn't really "race music".

With regards to time... I spend 5-15? hours per clip editing them. I've already spent about 10-12 hours on the April 18th race and I'm still honing it. I already spent about 4-5 hours editing the April 11th race, and that's far from done. This is with iMovie/mac. On Windows, with Windows Movie Maker, it's a much longer process due to the clunky interface. For example, if I insert a clip into my project, in iMovie it moves music/text as well. I can add/delete stuff whenever I want. In WMM it only inserts the clip so now I have to move every single comment and all the music. So I have to really decide what clips to use in WMM before I add music/text.

This doesn't include the data transfer from camera to computer, nor the mirrored backup onto another data computer. With the first helmet cams I just saved the DV tape. Now, with just electronic bits as "tape", I try and keep at least 3-4 copies of each clip, on different drives.
