Animal encounters besides dogs.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Animal encounters besides dogs.

What have you encountered? Mountain lions? Bears? Alligators? Vicious squirrels?

In some of the canyons around here there are some small caves scattered along the canyon walls. Seems like a perfect place for bears to live, so for the rest of the climb I pondered if I could out sprint a bear uphill.

Saw a bear a couple years ago, outside Placerville. I did a quick u-turn and sprinted up the hill I had been coming down. I think he could easily have run me down though.

I'm seeing a lot of dead squirrels lately. Some dead from brain trauma, and some flattened to a red pulpy mess that only crows can appreciate.

Last spring I pedaled up a hill while a deer strolled next to me. We both looked at one another and continued on our way.

Possums are hideous.

I've encountered a couple of boars before.

Mt. biking, I jumped a sow grizzly and two cubs. Luckily they ran the other way, but I still turned around (having been charged by a grizzly the previous year when running). The next while on the road bike I almost got run over by a moose which I surprised--luckily I shooed her away. This was in Alaska (duh).

Oh yeah, and cattle, elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and bison.

Ah yes, deer. I stopped last week and watched a group of them try to cross a highway. There would be a long gap of cars and they would get close, but then a car would come through and scare them off.

Well here in NJ I once ran over a squirrel in a race and I have come across several bears while mt biking..Nothing freaks one out more than trying to have a nice climb up in the Northern NJ area all by myself and look to your right to see two cute baby bear cubs....after a few seconds It hits me...MOMMA BEAR....OMG I just took off down the trail, scarey.

Today I nearly hit a group of indecisive peacocks in the middle of the road. Thought that was bizarre, seeing a flock of peacocks in the middle of Oklahoma City.
