Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Size 14/15 shoe clipless shoe recommendations

I have a big foot. I wear a 15 in some shoes, and a 14 in others.
I'm looking for recommendations on what shoes I should look for if I want to go clipless in this size range.

Also, the more affordable the better, as this is a first attempt at clipless.

What would be even more helpful, since I'm ultra paranoid about trying on shoes before I buy them, is either a place in the Dallas Fort Worth area that regularly carries shoes in that size, or an online store that has pays shipping on returns.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Oh, and I haven't bought the pedals yet, so system isn't an issue.

I just had the same problem. I was going to look online, but found that a 48/49 in the Euro sizes can range anywhere from a 12 to 16. It all depends on the manufacturer. I went to a shop in my area and wound up getting a pair of Specialized road shoes for $89 in size 48, which came out to a 14.5 in US sizes. This was my first pair of cycling shoes and now I'm just waiting for my pedals to come in the mail. I saved $40 over what the shop wanted for them so I got them online, but I would recommend you try on the shoes in a shop.

I wear 46 (abt. US 13), so I have similar concerns- doubly so because I have very narrow feet (width A). For my most recent pair, I went with Specialized because shops in their dealer network can usually get shoes in various sizes and widths from other part of the network. In contrast, I couldn't get any Sidi dealers to do the same- the story might be different now that they have a new US distributor. Anyway, I'd recommend going to a Specialized dealer just for the availability.

I wonder if Trek/Bontrager distro has a similar deal for Bontrager shoes? Or Lake, Northwave, etc.? For all their shortcomings, dealer networks help in some ways.

ps: now seriously, we should have an sticky with models and sizes with the opinions about how they fit or how one size compares with another brand to help in this kind of decisions.

I just made my first road shoe purchase and I tried 3 pairs before deciding on a pair of sidi megas (wide model).

My LBS let me buy and ride the different models and then make a decision. I could have returned them all and bought online and saved quite a bit, but that just ain't right. I'm pretty picky about shoes and have a problem with a nerve in my left foot, so the service my LBS provided was well worth the extra cost. I guess you could do the same thing with a good online vendor, but that just seems like a hassle. If i need to replace the shoes, I'd probably get the next pair online if I wanted the same brand/style.

You should be able to find a good LBS in the Dallas area that woudl let you try out a few and make a decision. If you are looking for lower end shoes, you wouldn't be saving that much online anyway.
