My first Century at HH100 - Thanks Wichita Falls!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My first Century at HH100 - Thanks Wichita Falls!

Hello all. I started riding again earlier this summer after about a 8 year hiatus. I set a goal of riding my first full century at the Hotter N Hell 100 and started training with some riders in my local area about 5 weks ago. Well, as those of you that may have attended, the weather in Wichita Falls this last weekend was VERY comfortable and I was able to complete the full century feeling very good. (yea!)

I wanted to thank everyone in Wichita Falls for putting on such a great event. This was the first time I attended and the people there were supportive, encouraging and extremely polite. Even out on the road, well away from any town, there were folks out on their tractors cheering the riders on.

I also want to thank the riding community for being such a mutually supportive group. At about mile 30, I had lost my training partner to an unfixable mechanical problem and I was on my third flat of the day. I was discouraged and contemplating calling it a day when some friendly folks from San Antonio stopped riding to help me out. (thanks Andreas, Mike and Debbie). With thier help (and donation of a tube, CO2 and bike repair knowledge), I was back in the saddle. I ended up riding the remaining 70 miles with my new friend Andreas and the day turned out to be one of my top 3 rides ever!

If YOU have ever stopped to help another rider and never been thanked fully...let me thank YOU now on behalf of those you helped. I was the one in need this past weekend and without people like YOU that were willing to help, my day would have turned out much different.

Anyway, I just had to share my the fact that this ride was a great experience...the community was awesome and you riders that take time to help others are an inspiration!

It was a glorious day! Even though a wet start and some close calls, I had a personal best 5hr 14min and average speed of 19.3 mph. Three short stops to refill bottles, and ate on the go. I just hope the people are okay from the two wreck "scenes" through which I rode. The second one looked really bad (around mile 80 or so).

If you're planning on riding in this years HH100 and don't have a place to stay yet, I am working on getting places for riders.

Send me an email if you can't book a hotel.
