Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hi,

I bought a Road ID less than a year ago, the wrist version.

I thought it was a very good product.

However, over the past few months I noticed the lettering is fading away. It is becoming very hard to read unless one holds it at just the right angle...and I suspect it will become completely unreadable in the next few months.

It has been well cared for, I don't think it has even gotten wet or been washed.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Doug
Hi datlas,

Any answer from them?

Funny you should ask....I just got an email from them.

They say it should not be fading, and they are sending me a new one.

I just love happy endings!

As long as you're prepared to replace the tag every 6-12 months, RoadID is a decent product.

I ordered my first one a couple of years ago. I started fading immediately and was next to useless after about 8 months. I needed to change my info anyway, so I ordered a new tag. The current one hasn't faded as badly as the first one, but after 6 months I notice that the lettering isn't uniformly dark. Hoping that the current one will last to the end of the season this year... but I'm not holding my breath.

Laser engraving? Maybe if you're measuring in microns! The surface looks dead flat and feels dead flat to me...

I am going to try clear nail polish on the next one, as suggested.

Calling the printing "laser engraving" is a bit of a stretch, IMO.

I'm glad to hear that. I've been thinking about ordering one, until I heard about the fading issue. When I get it I'll try the clear nail polish or some other clear top coat.

Why would you order these? Go to somewhere like:

https://www.dogtagsonline.com/

or

https://www.armynavy.com/

You don't have to worry about fading.

The answer to your question is that many of us don't want to wear something around our neck. RoadID provides several options for where to wear the tag, including wrist, ankle, or even shoe. If I wanted to wear a dogtag-style id, then the above choices would be on my list.

I can't wear necklaces as i'm allergic to almost all metals (ti and platinum being the two i don't react to). So, i'd have to order a dogtag and then figure out a way to mount it to a bracelet or some where else for it to be of any use. While ROAD ID might not be the most practical, it does serve a purpose.

I can agree with that. It doesn't go very deep, that's for sure.

What's funny is that my Fixx ID has "stainless" and "Road ID" printed on the top in a way that looks deeper and more durable than the information itself.

Hey everyone. This is P.J. Rabice with Road ID here. I received a link to this thread from a twitter follower and thought i would weigh in and provide some answers and clarifications.

1.The engraving on all of our IDs has a lifetime warranty. No questions asked. So, if your ID tag text is fading please contact customer service at 800.345.6336 or via email at CustomerService@RoadID.com. We pride ourselves on not only our quality product but also our customer service.

2. Regarding the fading tag text - in the past year we've made improvements to the engraving process which resulted in higher quality, longer lasting ID tags. But, like all products, nothing is perfect so please let us know if your product is not living up to your standards.

3. And lastly, I would confirm that ALL of our IDs are in fact Laser Engraved. Unlike rotary engraving, laser engraving does not leave a large indention embedded in the stainless steel. I know it may look like the text is “printed” rather than engraved, but i can assure that it is not. The marks you see have actually become part of the stainless steel and is better and more durable than the engraving you might be accustomed to seeing.

I hope that helps to clarify any questions or concerns you might have. Feel free to reach out to customer service with any additional questions or concerns.

OP chiming back in here, as already posted the company has responded quickly and favorably. I appreciate that.

I still think I will try the clear nail polish trick, just in case...

Great response PJ! If I wasn't already wearing one, I'd be ordering one right now.

I wear mine all the time. No problems with my engraving. I put mine through the rigors of the oil field even.

I put mine on when it arrived, and only take it off when kneading bread. Though I did just notice there is a mistake on it. I sent in an email as I don't know whether I made it or it was done in production. If I did, I'll be happy to buy a new plate.

They won't fade and they're CHEAPER! A single dog tag costs $4.50. Your order must be $8 or more
to order online though. Here's a site I ordered from>>www.dogtagus.com

So, does everybody who buys dogtags put one on their shoe in case their head gets blown off?

I don't have RoadID, but P.J.'s response has convinced me to get one. I just need to figure out what information I need to put on it.

I wear simple reflective ankle bands and thread a dog tag through that. Same functionality as Road ID. If you're riding through an area where you are at risk of getting your head blown off, I'd find another route.

You can get custom engraved plastic dog tags for a few dollars at pet stores.

Update (from post #41). Turns out I made the mistake. RoadID offered to make me a new plate at a reduced price. Thanks to RoadID! I'm quite happy with their customer service.

You don't have to worry about fading.
Dog tags don't provide a web site and a toll free phone number for first responders to get contact information, medication lists, medical conditions, allergies and physician info.
