bibs withOUT padding?

I'm having a hard time find 'em. I'm currently riding some primal shorts with only the chamois... found 'em on a clearance rack. Since then, I can't stand any padding (other than the chamois) or gel. Maybe it's me?

So, do yas know of some quality bibs that have only a chamois?

errr.....all my shorts are "only" chamois. not sure what you're asking here.

LordOpie 08-31-04 07:11 AM

besides chamois, many shorts and all bibs that I've found also have additional material and/or gel for extra padding.

So have you looked at the Performance Ultra bibs? I have them and don't consider them to be padded aside from the chamois. You could always buy some shorts that suit you and have someone who can sow modify them to add the bib straps on.

Look for something called a "unitard"

I did try 'em and they were awesome in all respects except for the excess padding. The catalog details the three types and levels of padding within 'em, so they are padded according to them.

Thanks for the link, but that looks like dancers clothing? Do they have a chamois?

To clarify for those wanting to help me, to me, a chamois is not padding, nor designed to cushion anything, it's just the anti-bacterial material designed for extra wicking. If you squeeze it versus padding or padded chamois, you'll feel the difference.

Dude, I think you may be unclear as to what a chamois really is.

...and then on the other hand, maybe he does know...

Don't know if you've gone out and looked at bibs lately, but I just went to a grand opening of a Supergo store last week and it seemed like all the mfgrs. started subscribing to the "more-is-more" school of padding. Most of the brands I looked at would make me look like I was carrying a king size pillow between my legs (insert your own joke)...

Anyway, all I ride is bibs and have an Assos, a Santini, a Pearl and a several Performance - and NONE of them are as thick and bulky as any of the ones that I saw, nor did they start out that way. So, if that's what Lord Opie is talking about...I'm with him.

Good shopping! (and I'll let you know if I find a good current version)

Our grand opening starts in two days... I feel like a kid waiting to hit the candy store after school :D

And I'll check out their selection of bibs.

Whew! I thought I was imaging that.

yup.

And damned if I'm going to buy a new saddle with less padding just so I can tolerate the friggin' cycling depends* they're pushing ;)

* Dunno where you're at, but that joke only works if they sell depends near you... it's adult diapers.

If all goes according to plan (and what does ...), this will never not be funny. If plan goes awry, I'm lookin' down and sayin', "that's not funny..."

If the Supergo stores are all similar, it was a huge store, sq. footage-wise. Lots of inventory - tons of Specialized - obviously one of their big retailers. Great selection of shoes (Sidi, from my response to your other thread), road and mtn, as well as a couple of Nike models on sale - one with a carbon sole - trouble is that Nike's only go to 46 or 7 (I'm 48). Good selection of clothing/accessories as well. Have fun!

LordOpie 08-31-04 06:58 PM

fine, you asked for it...

*BAD JOKE WARNING*

no, really, you've been warned...

no, you were warned, don't go getting a mod mad at me...

Q: What do old women taste like?

A: Depends!

*cue laugh track*

You might try Boure's Men's Pro bib shorts. These are on the expensive side but the chamois in them is very thin compared to most shorts I have. They are also very comfortable too.

I scored a pair of Sidi Laser's from Performance for $120 yesterday. Not 100% sold on 'em, need a slightly wider shoe, so if the Genius are a good price at Supergo, then I'll probably go with them since they'll conform a bit better, i think.

FXjohn 08-31-04 08:50 PM

Maybe you could smash the padding flat by leaving them under some weights.

LordOpie 09-04-04 03:48 PM

So, after calling and visiting a bunch of stores in the greater Denver area, I finally found what I wanted...

Descente Classic Pro Bib !! :D :D :D

Frankly, I'm thinking that if you need a fair amount of padding, then you should have the fit looked at and/or try a different saddle. These bibs have very little padding, probably just enough for the chamois to work properly. I rode three hours today, never once went numb and the chaffing irritation was the least of any short I've tried.

Thank you Descente!
