Win-Win-Win Situation

After my last incident on the bus where my bike was almost crushed in the bike rack by a tractor trailer, I decided to HTFU and ride the whole 35 miles in my morning commute instead of 17 miles ride + bus ride + 6 miles ride.

Well, I found out today that riding the whole way is actually faster than using the bus in the middle.

As a result:

- I got more ride time, thus improving fitness level.
- Saved the bus fare.
- Reduce my carbon footprint.

It is nice when the plan does pan out.

nice work.

i have to take the train in between biking to get to work, it would be over 50 one way on safe roads, and i wish i could conceivably do the whole thing. i may for "bike to work day" just because, but its not practical for day to day operations.

how long did it take you?

I have the same experience although my commute is shorter. I'm always thinking how far I could ride while waiting for the bus to arrive. After doing that for a short time I decided to just ride and have never looked back.

Keep it up!

One option is ride only one way each day. Drive in Monday, Ride home Monday night. Ride back in Tuesday morning, etc. Also gives you the ability to store the bike and clothes in the car.

Works pretty well if you have a parking space and don't need the car home every night.

Can you really trust the calories counter from these devices? it is impossible for me to believe that I burned almost 2,500 calories in a ride like this.

That's going to get tiring.

ha, Merlin riders think a like. :) I actually do this. There is a garage and I have an office to put my bike in. I leave my car, ride one way. That gives me an opportunity to take my dirty clothes home and bring it fresh one for the next day. The only thing is that you have to watch the weather for consecutive day ride. But if the weather sucks, I will take the commuter bus to get to work.

No, Garmin's are notorious for being way high on the calorie count, often 100% or more.

Thanks, I suspect as much. How about elevation? Are they fairly accurate?

I started doing this recently. My firm has a parking garage that I can use, and we have a shower. So I ride in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

I have a second car at home, so if something happens, I can just drive that car.

Guaranteed , your next flat will happen in that middle 12 mile stretch somewhere. That's just a given.

Either way, that's a long friggin' commute. Kudos to you.

I don't think I could commute more than ten miles. That's impressive.

The bus is still going to run whether or not you are on it. It is still going to burn almost as much gas. You are now actually wasting carbon :D

Well, that is why I carried a tube, a patch kit, a mini pump and 2 CO2 cartridges + cell phone. I am within civilization that I can get on the bus again or ask friends and coworkers to bail me out :)

Way to go to rain of the parade :) But saving bus fare and accumulating base miles can't be too bad :)
