Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't know because I do all my bike work. I've only gotten tipped once. All I did was adjust the limiting screws on the FD and fix the cable tension. Took about three minutes, so I didn't charge him (also was a regular).

If I took my car to a 'big' place for servicing, etc, I'd sometimes sling the young monkeys half-a-doz beers, and it seemed to work, coz I'd get the odd extra here and there

I don't tip anyone for doing the job they're paid to do. I don't get a bonus either on top of the regular paycheck.

Mine are all friends and riding buddies so no. I do buy them lunch and beers after rides though as do most in the riding group.

Give them food, and they'll remember you forever. I do this at every store I'm a regular in. Doesn't have to be much. A bag of Riesens works like crack.

I don't go to the shop for bike service, except for stuff that requires tools that I do not have. Generally it's the shop owner doing the work anyway. I am there often enough and sink enough money (in steady small amounts) into his business that I don't think the idea of tipping would even enter into it.

I get tipped sometimes.. usually not for anything like a headset or bottom bracket install, but rather for inflating their tires or tightening the stem.

If I walk into a shop and they do a "while I wait", I tip heavily. $10 to check my BB for creaking (it was when I arrived, wasn't when I left). I was in desperate straits, in SoCal, no tools, and BB sounded like it was eating bearings. Eating square bearings at that. Mechanic said no charge. (Shop = Nytro).

For scheduled work, no. Ditto car work etc.

For borrowed stuff, yes (like borrowing a local shop's fit bike, I think I gave them $60 for lunches).

I hang with my mechanic about once a month or so. I've been known to pick up his tab.

I got tipped once for not selling a guy tires. His treads looked like new, not sure why he thought they were worn out.

And if you race against them, bring the best and heaviest donuts you can find.
