garmin edge 305 recognition problems

So I just bought an edge 305 for $60 and it looks great, not abused or anything, looks almost new actually so I don't really know what's up, but sensor can recognize the cadence magnet on the crank with no problem, but it will only intermittently recognize the wheel's magnet. Not really sure why. And on top of that, that whole sensor, even though it lights up and all, will not actually talk to the unit itself. And when I plug the unit into my comp, my comp doesn't recognize the unit. Did anyone have a similar problem? I have a mac and I hear they're a pain to pair with garmins. Anyways, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, I also went onto their website to download the webupdater and other software, but none of them will mount to my HD or with the webupdater, it just straight up doesn't recognize that there's a unit plugged into the USB port

Hmm... Even if you didn't have the Garmin software installed I would think it would pick up the device regardless.

No idea.

Here are a few things to try: First, have you tried rescanning for sensors on the 305? You can do this through Settings > System > General on your 305. Also, how do you know that the sensor "recognizes the cadence magnet ... but it will only intermittently recognize the wheel's magnet" if the unit does not talk to the unit?? I wouldn't rely solely on the lights on the sensor as I've found them to be inaccurate. As a temporary workaround, the 305 IS capable of monitoring your speed through it's GPS (though mind you, this will drain the battery quickly).

As for pairing the GPS to you MAC, (Mind you, I have both the 305 and a Mac too) I agree with kayakdiver. It IS strange. Pasted below is a link to download the software from Garmin's website. What Software program are you using, by the way? I've found www.ridewithgps.com to be EXTREMELY easy to work with. It predictably recognizes my 305, AND, it prompts/links you to install the software amongst first use.

Keep us posted!

Oh, forgot to mention, what Mac OS are you using? I've been an avid Mac user for awhile, and may be able to help with Disk Mounting (aka "installing") the drivers!

sliceofjazz: thanks so much for your willingness to help! I'm running on mac 10.6.3 and I still can't get the unit to talk to the computer. I tried to download the USB driver from the Garmin site, but since it's .exe, I can't open it. I downloaded the communicator plugin to work with safari and ridewithgps.com, but since the device still won't talk to the mac, it's kind of hard to use the program haha

on the bright side, I realized why the cadence and speed sensors weren't talking to the unit, i didn't even realize it but there's a tab for "accessories" and inside it, on the box that said cadence, it was check as no, haha, no wonder it wouldn't read it. So now the speed and cadence are working, but not the connecting the computer deal.

btw, after a while, is it normal for neither the red nor green lights on the sensor to blink anymore?

Does someone have a PC you can use to see it that is the problem? Would be my next suggestion to eliminate the Garmin as the problem first.

Timwu12, "I tried to download the USB driver from the Garmin site, but since it's .exe, I can't open it." Lemme stop you there. Your Snow Leopard OS (which I'm running as well) won't be able to recognize an EXE file. You're downloading the wrong file; you want the .DMG extension. Go to this page:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/colle...t=999-99999-27

Download WEBUPDATER FOR MAC V2.0.6(middle option on the list). It's entirely possible that you downloaded the Windows-specific driver. After downloading the ~4mb disk image (WebUpdaterForMac_206.dmg), open it, and the file will automatically mount onto your HDD and you should see a dialog box that reads: "You will be guided through the steps necessary to install this software." Follow the steps, and install the drivers.

Note that the Webupdater is used to update the software on your Garmin, similar to the end-result of updating your Mac from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Updated drivers are key to communicating with peripheral devices, especially when concerning Macs, so I wouldn't be surprised if your problem is SOLELY due to the fact that the 305 has not been updated in awhile. For kicks, what Software Version is your 305 running now? You can find this under SETTINGS > SYSTEM > GENERAL > ABOUT EDGE.

Sliceofjazz, I'm running software version 3.20 on the Garmin.

So I downloaded the webupdater for mac and it downloaded and mounted fine, but when I go to open it up, (with the garmin turned on and plugged into the USB port) it pops up another small window that says: "No Devices were found. Please ensure that your device is connected and turned on and try again." But the thing is, it is turned on and connected! So I hit try again a couple times and still no luck :(

Kayakdiver: I'm having trouble with the Garmin connecting on a PC too. For the PC, I downloaded the USB driver for it, and it still wouldn't recognize it. But the thing is, it recognized it once, when I was updating the system software from the 2.90 that it came on to the 3.20 that's out now. So hypothetically, if it worked once, it should work again, but it hasn't
