traveling.. where to pack your helmet?

Hi

I'm flying out to western Canada tomorrow morning and decided against bringing my bike since I can rent one cheaper than flying with mine

so I have my pedals.. shoes and my pedal wrench packed and some clothing

but do you normally pack your helmet in your suit case r just carry it on or just buy something cheap when you get to your destination and.

I also have an older helmet I might bring instead of risking damaging my new one

Yaniel 05-09-10 11:50 AM

wear it ;)

Soma Roark 05-09-10 11:51 AM

I either rent (usually comes free w/ the bike) or carry on (strap it to my bag outside)

I put mine in my suitcase amongst my clothing. Usually, I put it upside down and pack socks/underwear/undershirts around it and in it. There ends up being plenty of padding around it and it doesn't really consume much space.

I second the option to strap it to the outside of your bag. Thats what I do with my hardhat when I travel for work. I think it takes up too much room inside the suitcase.

This sounds like what I'd do - never travelled with my helmet though!

Pack it on your head. No one will look at you funny then. haha

I always carry mine on and stow it under the seat. If you must check it, I would put it in a sturdy cardboard box inside your suitcase. Fill the extra space in the box with clothes. Wrap more clothes around the outside of the box. Your suitcase is going to be tossed around and squished multiple times during a plane flight.

The backpack I use as a carryon has a pouch for a helmet.

I worked for TSA and later for the county aviation dept. Needless to say, I spent thousands of hours at the airport and have seen many hysterical things happen to bags.

If you wear the helmet, it will be safe. As an added bonus, people will not attempt to talk to you. If the flight is not full you might even get an entire row to yourself!

If you carry it on, pack it in your bag. It will be fine. It does not take up too much room as you can stuff things where your head goes.

If you check it, do not strap it to the outside of the bag. If it gets hung up in machinery, it is gone.

At any rate, it is a helmet - not a Ming dynasty vase. Pack it inside a bag and it will be fine.

That's what I do. It can take up a lot of space in your suitcase. I feel pretty cool carrying mine. (I'm simple).

Machka 05-09-10 03:21 PM

I usually have it among my carry-on stuff.

DataJunkie 05-09-10 03:52 PM

I packed an old helmet inside my suitcase. It doesn't take up much space and you can pack items inside it like a shirt.
My bag arrived in Vancouver beat to hell. Strapping it to the outside would have resulted in no helmet.

What he said.

My son has a bike specific backpack with a place for the helmet, which he uses as his carry-on.

rbart4506 05-09-10 07:12 PM

I carry it on in my carry on bag with shoes, pedals, gloves, saddle, and one days clothing....That includes bike clothing...If they lose my luggage I wanna ride! So I have the important stuff with me...

SkinnyLegs 05-09-10 07:18 PM

My helmet goes in a Giro helmet pod which then gets stuffed into my carry-on. It's cheap and gives me peace of mind when traveling.

Except that your frame is down in the cargo hold getting lost. :roflmao2:

True, but I still have the rest so I can try and find a bike...Either rented or borrowed...

In helmet pod clipped to my carry-on day pack.

Jerseysbest 05-10-10 07:07 AM

I usually travel with a cheaper helmet, so its usually strapped to my carry on unless I'm also checking my bike and not wanting them to know its a bike...

Or, depending on the bike, my helmet fits in between the rear triangle nicely when packed up.

I traveled with my helmet a couple of months ago. I just packed it with my luggage. If the thing is designed to withstand hitting the pavement at over 40 mph, it can definitely withstand bumping around in the plane. :D Have fun!
