Quick question about sunglass lenses
Please indulge my obsessive behavior. I can't buy anything unless I feel like I have the "optimal" solution.
So I have Oakley flak jackets, and scratched my lenses. So I have to buy replacements. I do a lot of dawn/dusk riding, so I got Persimmon (61%) Now I have a choice for sunny: VR28 (28%) VR28 Black Iridium (18%) (have a slight reflective surface) Black Iridium Polarized (9%) ( I like these for driving) I was thinking of doing the plain VR28 + Black Iridium Polarized, so i'd have a good range for varying conditons. I realize this is an extremely minor point, but does anyone have an opinion about the VR28 vs. the VR28 Black Iridium? |
Being a fellow sunglass obsessed person this is right up my ally! To me, the "semi-dark" VR28 lens is kind of a waste. Most of the time you either need a dark lens (sunny conditions), or a very light lens (cloudy days/dawn/dusk). And since you already have the persimmon you'll get the most benefit IMO from getting the darkest possible i.e. the VR28 Black Iridium Polorized. Not to throw you off, but why not go with the brown lens? They're better for sharper details. But, as I used to tell people when I managed a sunglass store... it's really what you're comfortable with seeing. :)
I have a really old pair of Oakley SubZero's that I still use and love. They're brown lens with Gold Iridium and scratched to hell, but I think they're perfect for cycling. No frame, big lenses, light-weight, and dark enough. |
I previously had the black iridium polarized, but scratched them. This gave me an opportunity to shop colors, if some would give me better color/contrast like a superhuman.
I read here that people like VR28-- looks brown to me. I'm hesitating to to polarized again because they do make things look weird when you move your head around. Maybe I'll get another set of black iri polarized for driving/beach/etc. I love buying specialized technical stuff. I feel like batman. |
how the heck are you guys scratching your lenses?
for sunny days: grey, which is 15%. I see black iridium as good for sunny days with snow on the ground. |
I found a pair of Oakley's in the road that had been run over.
I sent them back to the manuf with a note about how they were my favorites. They sent me a new pair, which I promptly sold to my friend. I thought the lifetime warrantee was why people paid $100s for sunglasses? Enjoy |

Some guy pushed his way in, god knows why he was so pissy. I had to pull my bike suddenly to the side, and a rubber hood pushed on the lens. Nice square scratch, unusable. |
