Trek 1.1 a good first road bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trek 1.1 a good first road bike?

Ive always owned mountain bikes, shopping for my first road bike. My local bike shop sells the Trek 1.1 for $599 (all aluminum) and a Giant Defy 3 for $750 (alum frame, advanced grade composite fork). The Trek looks very nice and I love my Trek mountain bike (it has served me well).

Looking for comments/suggestions/tips.

Thanks

The 1.1 isn't bad for entry-level, but you will be desiring a little nicer components after you ride it for a while. I would save up (maybe get a CL bike for cheaper) and get a 2.1 if you are set on Trek. You'll get nicer components (105) and a nicer wheelset. It just depends on how much money you have and how much you like the bike.
#1 suggestion: GO TEST RIDE a ton of bikes so you know how different frames/manufacturers feel to you

FWIW...I just bought my first road bike less than I year ago. I went with the Trek 1.2 (so slight upgrade over 1.1) and am completely happy with it. I don't really have anything to compare it to though.

I also bought the 1.2 and have no regrets with it. There is a wheelset at Performance that i am going to save up for (don't need them, just want them for the cool factor).

If you really want a trek I'd stay away from the 1.1.. This model 1.2 is better than the one 2 years ago and possible last year.. the 1.2 is 18 speed and if you wanted to get rid of the thumb shifters then a set of tiagra's and you're good to go.. the 1.2 will get you a carbon fork and seatpost and something else. like I said if your dead set on a trek go no less than the 1.2.. you'll thank yourself.. I have an 08 1.2 that had 22/2300 (sub sora group) which is on the 1.1 this year. It was utter junk and it sucked to the point I didn't even want to be on the bike. but now I've dressed it up and am happy with my trek. Hope this helps

here's mine now
