Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

being a bike poseur > being a car poseur

driving a race car i don't "need":
expensive
limited by police and traffic
if i push the engine to its limits, i will likely end up in jail or dead.

riding a race bike i don't "need":
relatively affordable (compared to the car)
limited by me
if i push the engine to (or beyond) its limits, i will likely be faster next time.

true story.

and here's my poseur mobile:

pictured here with the chain on the small ring, a bike bag on the seat, tire branding not lined up with valve stems, valve stems pointing in all kinds of directions...all wrong.

Rival and a Felt F3SL? you're a bad poseur.
I was hoping to see a Time RXR Ulteam or Look 585 or something, not a Felt with Rival.
just sayin'.

I can handle the misaligned valve stems and no white garage door, but will you please, for the love of god, flip that freaking stem!?

I used to drive a very fast car daily. 550 whp and under 3000 lbs. I used to also take it to the track 2 times a week. so unless you're racing that bike, the race car > race bike in this case.

This will be the last of these types of threads I open because they're just reminders on how complicated people can make things that are simple. Ride your bike....end of story.

No, they're like car wrecks, you know you shouldn't look, but you do. You'll be back.

heh, no not really. i'm a huge component of "buy what you like, forget the haters"
i was just thinking about how when i was in college i used to lust after high end cars, and now that i'm older i kinda couldn't give a crap, because most of my driving is a traffic-filled commute.

i just moved to bikes because it's much cheaper/easier/faster to rebuild a bike than a car. plus the car would make me fat.

looks slow. you should just send it to me. you need a faster bike.

at least in cycling the engine rebuild is cheaper.....it just takes forever
and in my case, by the time the engine has been rebuilt, it needs a new rebuild

In most cases road bike = race bike. The term "racing bicycle" is interchangeable with "road bicycle." There's no real difference until you're riding a touring bike or a cyclocross bike, at which point the differences are very minor (frame geometry, tires, and additional equipment). By most of our standards, any road bike with two bottle cages and a pair of clipless pedals is a race bike.

ok?

poseur means owning a race bike or race car and not racing.

Everyone who reads the Road Cycling forum owns a race bike (in the sense that it is a racing bicycle). You're not a poser until you're wearing full factory replica kit and a beer gut, in my opinion, though... or you ride a track bike on the street.

If you own a race car and don't race it... then clearly you've got some sort of issues. Or you own a race team... But driving a sports car does not mean you own a race car.
