Lance is 5'10" - why does he ride a 58cm frame?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That idea worked really well when some figured out that virtually every race of any consequence in Europe is run by ASO. And the sponsors of said teams said we did not pay for you guys to be running second and third tier non-tv races.

It costs a ton of money to put on these races and the money they get is from sponsors and tv contracts.

There are no paying spectators.

Maybe they should put up luxury suites all along the 100+ miles of the course. for each stage.

I'm 5'11 1/2" ht; 32 1/2' inseam and I just bought a Madone 2.1 58cm and went from 100mm to 90 stem and It feels right.
For some reason the 56cm feels a bit tight. I have been on a mountain bike for the last 15 years and maybe it could be a reason the bigger bike feels comfortable. This is my first Roadie.

The 58cm actual TT is 57.3cm

I'm 5'7" and ride a 54cm frame with 55 cm effective top tube. My saddle is nearly all the way back on the rails of a setback seatpost, and I use a 100 mm stem. Couple inch saddle to bar drop. I like the fit, but most folks my size would be on a smaller frame.

I'm 5'11 and i ride a HF FM066 size 52cm, effective top tube is 53.5cm, with a 120mm stem, setback seatpost and 175mm cranks. Feels perfect.

My first road bike was a 58cm CAAD10 and was way too big for me. I would get a sore neck on long rides.

Guys who come off mountain bikes tend to prefer a bit more upright position. To achieve a more upright position, a taller head tube is needed. So, to me, you chose the right size frame for your body size and riding position preference. Lance always rode stretched out and relatively high. There are two ways to achieve aero benefit. A more stretched out position is a more stable platform for the body versus in and down. I believe if more rode like Lance in terms of position on the bike, there would be a lot more happy riders out there.

I am now 5'9" (used to be 5'10 1/2") with a 32.25" inseam. I can ride 54-58 with varying stem lengths. My Masi is a 58 and my Guru steel is a 55. I can ride either very comfortably but the 55 feels a bit more natural.

I'm just under 5'11" and have a 34" inseam. I'm very happy with the fit of my 58cm frame.

I'm 5'7'' and ride 56cm. Pro fit and all body parts for this old man are happy. Guess there is a very big range of suitable size frames for same size bodies.

5'10 with 33" inseam here. I feel very comfortable on a 52cm (53cm effective top tube) bike with a zero setback seatpost. I really can't ride anything with a setback seatpost.

describing a modern sloping toptube frame as 58cm is about as meaningful as describing a women's dress as a size 10.

what's 10 about it? 10 what? it doesn't even have a unit size AFAIK.
