Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Purchase Ever

Ok so i finally got it. After months of shoping around, I finally got a 2004 Specialized Allez Triple. Let me tell you something, it was honestly one of the best purchases i ever made. Prior to this i had a 30 year old Kabuki submariner (great bike, but no rode bike). I got on the Allez this morning and i was FLYING!!!!!! It was awsome, so comfortable and fitted just for me. I just have 2 questions for you. first both brakes work great, but the front brake makes this loud screeching noise when I apply a certain amount of pressure. I checked it out and the pads arent rubbing on anything they shouldent be. Is this normal?? Second, when i pedal and shift gears, everything functions very nice and smoothly. The only thing is, when I got home and hung it up, I moved the pedals backwards and it was very bumpy and not flowing smoothly, but again while riding normaly everything works perfectly. Is that something I should be concerned about? And thats it. I love the bike and thank you guys very much for helping me pick it out!!

Take it back to the shop. This is what htey do. They'll adjust the brakes, and look at the gears. Wonderful to fly down the street like that, isn't it?

I got the same bike just over a month ago and have had the same problem with the breaks, just havnt had the time to bring it into the shop. Thge big problem I've had is it tends to switch gears in the middle of a climb when I havnt touched anything, so i need to get that fixed as well. Other then those two problems I've loved mine

all shops should always give you a tune-up after a handful of rides... cables stretch is normal, things need adjusting, tightening, whatever.

If your shop doesn't give you a free tune-up a few weeks to a month after the purchase, blow up their store.

That is the same bike that my wife purchased two weeks ago. She also said it was her best purchase ever. She loves it 100 times more than her previous mtb. The shop that we bought it from told her to bring it back in after 2 weeks for a free tune up.

I've had one of these for about 2 month ago. My experiences have been similar.

The brakes squealed until I got tired of them, so I replaced the pads. The noise went away instantly and hasn't returned. I think it is the OEM pads, not any adjustment problem with the brakes.

I've had to take it back once for the problems of not changing gears when I shift or oscillating between to gears (both dealing with the rear derailure), and they told me the cables had stretched. They fixed it in just a couple of minutes.

Overall I like the bike very much.

Do what others have said and if squeak persists, change to Kool Stop brake pads - they'll increase your stopping power eliminate the squeak.

Have a good one...

the brake pads will make that noise when they aren't toed in towards the rim correctly. The front of the pad should be contacting the rim first, the pads should not be parallel to the rim, this will cause that screeching noise. You can adjust the pad yourself with an allen wrench, the front of the pad should be closer to the rim than the rear of the pad.. hope this helps.
