Experiences with 6700 STI's with 6600/7800 drivetrains?
 

I'm going to upgrade the shifters on my 07 Roubaix from 105's, and am torn between going for a set of 6600/7800 shifters and the newer 6700 ones. I have 7800 RD and FD and 105 brake calipers FWIW. I've heard various questions about compatibility with the new Ultegra shifters that seem to boil down to "it works, but it might not shift the best" and I'm not about to replace my RD and FD.

Has anyone run the new shifters with the older derailleurs and got some feedback on how it's working in the real world?

I ran a set with 6700 derailleurs, and then with DA 7800 derailleurs.. I didn't notice a difference in shifting performance. FWIW, I didn't like the shifter throw on the 6700 shifters as well as my DA 7800, but they do shift nicely.

I'm running 6700 shifters with an otherwise all Ultegra SL group.

Rear shifting is good. A tad less smooth than with my Ultegra SL shifters. Every now and then shifting from larger rear cog to smaller results in a two cog shift or a delayed shift. I've become accustomed to priming my shifts by first moving the lever to eliminate what I consider the excessive throw, then engaging the shift. When I do this rear shifts are just as good as with my 6600 shifters.

OTOH, front shifts are fantastic. Much better than with the Ultegra shifters. Almost instant. And very crisp. I did a bit of research online before purchasing and can say that others have experienced the same.

I'm not sure how they would work with 7800, but they work quite well with 6600. Of course, YMMV.

I have full 6600 group and upgraded the shifters to 7800...what a world of difference! I highly recommend it. The shifting is very smooth and precise. Has very nice feel to it. I really can't explain it. Now I know why Dura-Ace is top-of-the-line.

I am not sure how much improvement I can get upgrading the rest of the components (FD/RD/Brakes)...

Also, i've upgraded the wheels to Ksyrium SL SSC...totally different bike!

I would think the issue comes with the brakes, not the derailleurs. Isn't the mech advantage different with 6700/7900 vs 6600/7800?

i have a bike with the opposite- 6600 shifters and 6700 drivetrain. shifts pretty well.
