Bell Sweep vs. Bell Volt

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bell Sweep vs. Bell Volt

For those who have tried both the Bell Sweep (either Road or XC) and the Bell Volt, I am curious about your feedback:
  • Do you think the Volt was noticeably more comfortable than the Sweep? (weight, ventilation, etc)
  • Do the two models fit the same?
I already did a search without finding much on this particular topic. Thanks, in advance, for your feedback.

I tried both on at the end of last year and found the Volt to be more comfortable for my head. However, I don't know if there is actually any difference in the adjusting mechanism, or if the shapes are ever-so-slightly different, etc. On that particular day, the Volt felt better to me.

I was wondering the same thing. I did a google search and found on some other forums that most people think the fit is almost the same, but the Sweep is a better value. I just ordered a sweep for my wife this week and I use a Volt, I'll let you know in a few days after it arrives.

Volt is more comfortable, but they're essentially the same helmet.

I have had Sweeps for years. I now have a Volt. I feel it is incrementally more comfortable. Definitely lighter. More air flow. And cheaper, picked up last years model for $99.

unless the old sweeps were considerably heavier, the current Sweep is lighter than the Volt.

I have the Volt and it fits me fine but I've never tried the sweep. Try them both and decide which one fits you best.

I got a Volt when I crashed my Sweep. I liked the Sweep fine, but the Volt has an additional adjustment that my sweep didn't have, and it fits my head just a tad better. Otherwise, fit is very similar.
Still, I'd be happy with either. I didn't feel a weight difference, but then I'm not really sensitive to minor weight differences in helmets.
It's a can't lose decision.

Have both--don't notice much difference between the two.

If it comes down to cosmetics, I think I still like the Sweep R better than the Volt.

I have the Ghasallo (sp?), Sweep R, and the Volt. They all fit about the same, the Volt having the verticle adjustment that the other's don't have. The Sweep is a bit lighter on a scale, can't tell the diff on my head. I can tell exactly ZERO difference between airflow between the Sweep and the Volt.

The Sweep is more comfortable because the Volt has tiny contact points and pads in comparison to the other helmets. If there is such a thing as a hot-spot on a helmet, the Volt has a tiny but not annoying one.

Hope that helps.

Hirohsima...what about the Ghisallo? I'm thinking about a new helmet and the new Performance catalog just arrived showing the Ghisallo for $70 (same at Nashbar too). Any comparison between it and the others?

I have both...train with my Sweep R and race with the Volt. The Volt is lighter and smaller with a slightly improved fit over the Sweep. Both ventilate pretty well, if you like the Sweep the Volt is a step up...not a giant one but noticeable none the less.

I stand corrected the Volt is 2 grams heavier, it just looks lighter.

It fits well, is lighter than the Volt, but has less bling, and fewer vents. The volt *might* be a tad bit cooler than the Ghisallo... but to be honest, I really cannot tell.

Before you drop $ at performance... I got a Ghisallo at Real Cyclist / Bonktown for $45 not that long ago... may be worth checking to see what they have left.

I have the Ghisallo, the Sweep and the Volt.

They all fit the same, except that as noted, the Volt has an additional "up/down" adjustment.

Both the Sweep and the Volt are comfortable and to my mind they fit the same, barring the additional adjustment.

For those of you saying the Volt is "definitely lighter".

Check the Bell website.

It in fact weighs more than the Sweep.

yup. 3 grams, which is about what a penny weighs.

I didn't say it was significant, just that it is more.

Expanding on one of the other posts above, the contact points on the Volt are different enough that in fact it gives me a headache.

The Sweep doesn't.

I just bought a new Sweep last week.

I had to look it up! (But you are correct)

Answer

It depends on the date.
  • Indian Head pennies dated 1864 to 1909 weigh 3.11 grams.
  • The Lincoln, Wheat Ears Reverse penny weighs 3.11 grams except for steel cents made only in 1943 that weigh 2.67 grams.
  • The Lincoln, Memorial Reverse penny (1959 to mid 1982) weighs 3.11 grams.
  • The Lincoln, Memorial Reverse penny (mid 1982 to present) weighs 2.5 grams.

I don't understand why the volt is so heavy either. When I had a crash and cracked my first volt which was a medium, my friend lent me his spare helmet which is one of those 30 dollar walmart helmets in XL, and it weighed exactly the same on the scale as my medium volt. a $200 medium helmet should not weigh the same as a $30 XL helmet! the volt does keep my head much cooler though.

Thanks to everyone for their responses! I was able to find a great deal on a Sweep, so I chose that one. (It was an eBay deal where I got the last one; otherwise I would have posted a link to the deal.)

What did you end up paying, if you don't mind me asking? I just bought a Volt off ebay a couple weeks ago and ended up paying about $130.00.

It was just under $100, including shipping.

I have a Sweep and Volt, both size large, both 2009 models.

I just weighed them both without visors.

The Sweep was 326 grams and had a label inside it that said 340 grams.

The Volt was 30 grams heavier at 356 grams. The label inside the Volt said 350 grams.

I always thought the Sweep felt lighter and now I know why. I never took the time to weigh them until today.
