campy chain pins

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

campy chain pins

Where can I get replacement pins for pre-2006 campy 10-speed chain (6.1mm)?

I figured this is the best place to ask.

If you are replacing your chain, a 5.9 chain and pins will work. I ran one on my 2003 Record crank and run on my 2006 Chorus crank too.

why not just buy a 10 speed master link or power link or whatever you want to call it.

I don't like master links I want the actual pin because the master links are 0.2-0.3mm wider and don't shift as well.

I'd just ask my LBS to do it, but the idiots will probably put the wrong pin type in and cause it to fail. If you want something done right you have to do it yourself.

I have run chains with and without master links. I don't notice any difference. Also, you can get master links for 5.5, 5.9 or 6.1 width chains. They have them at www.lickbike.com

Well I have a master link on it now and I do notice the difference. The problem is that the master link is always wider than the chain it fits because there needs to be 0.1mm of play to get it on. So a masterlink for a 6.1mm chain is wider than 6.1mm and a master link for a 5.9mm chain won't fit a 6.1mm chain cause the pins aren't long enough.

forget the pin and use a wipperman master link or a KMC masterlink for 10 speed. Still cant figure it out why campagnolo is still doing the pin thing, is the most useless piece of C...p! ever made by them.

Good luck

In the grand scheme of things, do you think that .1 mm matters (assuming that this is even the case)? Don't you think that the people who designed the variety of master links also thought about this? I've had great luck with the KMC links but have a Superlink ready to try out as well. I don't see why there would have to be any more play in a master link than in the other links. It's just a bike chain.

It is the case, you can measure it. Also, of course the people who designed the master links thought about it very carefully and concluded it would make them good money to convince people to ignore the difference between a master link and a proper pin.

Finally, to understand why a masterlink must have play simply consider the fact that if it were as tight as a regular link then there'd be no way to get it apart. You have a point though I bet single use master links are a bit narrower since they don't have to come apart.

Are you using a superlink? They might be different from other master links. I have used them for years on both 6.1 and 5.9 chains and for me they work perfectly.

I doubt you can find the pins, Campy only sells the HD link kits for the C10 chains. They very clearly advise against replacing just the pins.
