Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Century Completed! Stats!

I did a ride called the Fletcher Flyer out in Henderson, NC yesterday. I met up with two friends and had a BLAST! I was so happy with how I rode, I felt strong, and I finally started to get the hang of hill climbing (not mountain, mind you, that's the next goal). I switched gears MUCH earlier in the climbs, easier than I thought I would need, and then had the oomph at the end to power up and OVER the rest of the hill. Felt like such a beast!

Distance: 100.34 miles
Ave Speed: 19.6 mph <--I was drafting I would say 65% of the time, and unbeknownst to me, pulling a large group of people the rest of the time, my friend would tell me later.
Elevation: 4400 feet <-- advertised as a flat century, so I know that's not very impressive, but there were still some steady hills, and almost all of them at then end, of course.

Just wanted to share. I even REALLY paid attention to recovery (massage afterwards, ice on my calf, compression socks, ibufrophen) and feel like I could go out and do my challenging group ride tomorrow night if I wanted to!
