Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help choosing roadbike

I've been searching for a new road bike for some time now, and I don't really want to spend a lot of money since I'm not a serious rider. I really like the retro look similar to most fixed geared bicycles but I live in an area with hills. If I can't find a decent road bike that has the classic look I'm going for at a reasonable price, I may end up buying a hybrid or settle with a fixed/single speed bike.

A LBS has a Specialized 2010 Allez Steel available for $609, but the only thing that bothers me is that it weighs 27lbs.

Another LBS has a hybrid 2006 Raleigh Route 1 for $500 out the door, but I'm not to happy with a slanted frame. Beside that, the bike is really light and is the closest hybrid I can find similar to a road bike.

where do you live? one of the lbs's near me has a nice Kona with downtube shifters thats in the 300 range, i think its an excellent non-serious road bike, i dont know how much it weights, but its not a total tank, for sure.

there seems to be a lot out there in the way of cheaper road bikes now-a-days, and if you're not riding a ton or competitively, i think downtube shifters are passable to keep the budget down.

if my budget were in the 600 range, and i was a newb, i would get the bikes direct windsor fens hands down. alu frame, and shimano 105 mainly, @699, thats a bargain.

I did take a look at a few Kona Bikes at my LBS, I liked the way they rode but I'm really sold on having a classic look on the frame. I don't like how the Kona's slant up towards the handlebars.

I'd vote for the specialized. You can certainly get a "better" deal at BD but it's nice to get your first bike from the LBS so that they can help you with fit, tuning, etc. It's a good entry-level price and -- if you get really into it -- you can get fancy with upgrades or a quality used or new bike online once you know what you're doing.

If you want the classic steel look without the weight you are going to have to pay for it.
