Bar Tape Damage, Update From My Weekend Mishap

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That looks like some tape I used to have. It was sturdy enough, but not very comfortable. Definitely get the gel things that go underneath it. Also, I CANNOT put on new handlebar tape and go a whole week without also falling and subsequently damaging my shiny new tape job. Ever. Can someone explain this unfortunate phenomenon?

You are using a bike when you should be walking and not chewing gum.

The crash took me completely of guard the rear tire slide right out from under me at no more than 3-5mph on a 120+deg corner (very odd intersection)

I just got some Pink Fizik Microtext tape. It seems pretty durable. Has a slicker feel than regular Fizik, but I kind of prefer how it feels. It also seems easier to clean.

I recently had to rewrap the tape after changing some cables. The tape still feels good after I reused it.

Everyone knows you're not supposed to put the electrical tape ON the bar, CyciumX.

Just kidding.

Actually you're not kidding, but I do that for all my bikes for a bit of added protection when using a specific mount for a camera I have that I made from steel that doesn't have enough surface area for a rubber shim.

Any pics, Cycium? I'd be interested in a new mount.

Also, just for the sake of keeping this thread on track, Fizik tape is pretty good stuff.

Actually, no pics. That bike is currently hanging in an Art shop in San Francisco (Lower Haters) and the mount is laying around there somewhere. But its simple enough to envision. Plumbers tape held together with screws on each side with a standard cam mount screwed from underneath.

Oh, sweet. I'll have to figure something out this summer. Also, Ube did a wonderful job on that frame.

Same here. I just put white Fizik Microtext on the red Bianchi. Looks fabulous. It's a little slick and I've been warned it's slippery when wet (from sweat or water). It is easy to clean.

Here's a review from Competitive Cyclist about Fizik microtex and Fizik dual bar tape:
https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE=PRODUCT_REVIEW&ARTICLE_ID=2553&QUERY=RDBHANDLEBARTA&RETURN=review search for 'handlebar%20tape'&RETURNLINK=%2Fza%2FCCY%3FPAGE%3DPRODUCT_REVIEWS%26QUERY%3DRDBHANDLEBARTA%26RETURN %3Dmain%20reviews%20page&PRODUCT_REVIEW_PAGE=&SEARCH_NAME=handlebar tape&QUERY_BRAND=no

I installed some dual after sliding out the wheels on wet road and really like it. Nice grip though it does seem to absorb water when it rains and takes a while to dry. I wear gloves but this tape has very nice bare hand feel. The dual is very tough, so some people might find it hard to wrap, but the toughness makes it almost impossible to tear.

I still like Profile tape.
Quickly/Easily available at REI, cheap (something like $6-$8 minus ~10% in dividend), light (my taped 44cm bars weigh 36 grams), and good padding and durability.

I'm not a big fan of Fizik Soft Touch. It's grippy, but the texture just bothers me. Soft Touch white is also much, much harder to clean.

Fizik Microtex is awesome, though.
