Will an 11-28 work with Dura Ace RD-7800?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Will an 11-28 work with Dura Ace RD-7800?

Sorry if this has been brought up before but searches here keep giving me discussions on sram XX..

The 2008 RD-7800 manual says maximum rear cog is 27t. 2009 RD-7900 specifically says "New design with an expanded chain wrap capacity accommodates a maximum 28 tooth cog for better compatibility with compact cranks".

So what if I tried throwing on an 11-28 with the 7800? I'm not sure if I have the short or long cage or not, but both state a maximum of 27 teeth on the rear cog.

Appreciate the help..

Sounds like you answered your own question. But from what I've read it will probably work.

I tried it and could not make it work without issues. Maybe a chain line thing? Went back to the 12-27. In the big picture what does one tooth on a cassette get you?

Yes. That is the set up I have. I had to get a longer chain. I had a 12-27 before and I like have a little extra on both ends. There are times when I can't find the perfect cruising gear in the middle because by definition there are some gaps with the wide spread in gears.

I have done 11-27 and I have done 11-28. I went back to 11-27 when I went with Di2.

The practical difference between 27T and 28T? Almost nothing. A 2 mph wind is as big a deal.
